Most of the terminology was started by GraveDiggerMax AKA VaBchMax (thats Virginia Beach to you land lubbers) and has carried through to several forums.

Lane = area of damp/wet sand between the water's edge and dry sand. many treasures hide here with very little trash

Nut = Cache or what was found metal detecting for the day.

Cut = Beach erosion caused by storms/wind looks like someone cut away at the natural slope of the sand.

Now for a couple more

Diggers = bikini clad young ladies who assist in handling the scoop

OH BOY = I don't know how to describe this one http://www.thetreasuredepot.com/cgi-bin/surfandsand/ss_config.pl?read=82056

Ruff as Bricks = pounding surf

Mine = area of surf usually knee to chest deep before the waves break - many very nice treasures hide in this area.
