Faulty AT Pro???

I bought my wife an AT Pro last month. After firing it up, the first thing that I noticed was the dead silence until the coil passed over a target. Is it supposed to have a slight "mosquito type noise" like all my other detectors or does it run dead quite?
When I try to ground balace the unit, I get a reading of 95 on the panel, a continuous hum that does not change in frequency until I start to pump the unit. When I pump it, it produces a sound like a lot of constipated crickets for want of a better noise description that does not get quieter - it appears to be running at full volume level during ground balance. It doesn't matter what setting or location you try, the unit will not run quietly or smoothly unless you lift the coil up to about 2ft off the ground. This is where it quietens down a bit. I have been using detectors for 10 yrs now, spent over a thousand hrs detecting so I don't classify myself as a beginner. I have tried for years to get my wife into detecting but at the moment, she says I shouldn't have sold my E-Trac & mentions this AT Pro, a proctologist & my backside in the one sentence. Can any one offer a suggestion before I need to make an appointment with the local Proctologist? Thanks.

What do you have your sensitivity set at? If you are comparing the AT Pro with Minelab, that is like apples and oranges. I have both the AT Pro and the Excal, it takes some getting used to in the Pro Mode and you may need to turn your sensitivity down until she quiets down. If you are on prime ground with no mineralization you might be able to run it at full throttle with the sensitivity setting where she is running quiet with no crackles, then you will be digging holes 18" deep! I just got my machine and ran it for 2 weeks in FL on the beaches, took a little getting used to, especially with the sensitivity but the performance is there. I have been detecting for 12 years using all Minelab machines and there is a difference between Minelab and Garrett. Once you get used to it, you will love how it locks on a target with a solid sound and identification numbers........pull tabs are a 53 while quarters come in at 85, nulls out iron, and junk like bottle caps will have 2-3 different sounds as the coil passes over it and the numbers will jump around.

I think I may have to return it as you said. It doesn't matter what the sensitivity is set at. I've tried it with every setting from Nil up to Maximum sensitivity on all 6 modes. As for targets, just about every signal jumps from -6 up to 88 for the same item & the depth setting shows over 8 inches for a coin sitting on the surface.
I'm still curious though, is the machine supposed to have no threshold noise at all? The only time it makes any type of noise is when it detects a target & of course, when it screams it's head off during ground balance. (you can pump it all day in sand, a green park or very heavily mineralised soil & the GB doesn't change from 95.)
Thanks in advance for any suggestions,
Gary.

PS: I have tried several factory resets - holding the on/off button in for 5 secs on startup.

As mentioned, there is no humming in the background nor the ability to control it, which is referred to as threshold. The AT pro is a silent search machine, with modulated audio, which means the deeper the target, the quieter the sound. Over all the AT pro is an excellent audio machine with a tid display to further validate the targets. Please....turn your sensitivity down, and add some discrimination. It sounds like from what you are describing as a very junky iron infested area. You may want to review the following videos off the Garrett site;

.

Did you GB right? push the GB button and change pos or neg with the notch dsc button? I sow one guy pumping away and doing it wrong.
Personally, I would remove the connections and re do them. Go back to factory settings. Go to std mode,GB the right way, iron disc to 40 and start checking coins. Make sure the coil cable is semi firm to the shaft (I use velcro cable ties).

Just saying

No threshhold noise. Iron discrimination set at 35. Depending on where you are swinging, you will get noise, it detects every bit of metal in the ground. Depth is measured from the bottom of the coil to the target even with air inbetween........was your coil 8 inches from the target? This machine will detect 2 targets at the same time.......maybe you had the coin on top of the ground, but then there may have been something else underneath it. You have a STD mode and a PRO mode and your settings are a little different. The STD is like running an ACE 350........does not like the wet conditions and will false all over. Having an Excal and then using the GT was an adjustment for me, I did not like it at first, but then as I became more familar with the settings things got much better.
It could be that you got one of the machines that came off the production line very early and had some faulty wiring. Call them direct, great customer service, send it in and they will take care of you right away.

I'm not quite sure what a constipated cricket sounds like...........

This was recorded after a cricket consumed a slice of pizza with x-tra cheese.......... definitely constipated :bouncy:

the constipated cricket still not as quiet as the at pro hunting.

Hi Everyone,
I made contact with the crew at Garrett & was more than impressed by their "over the phone" service. I was able to demonstrate the problem & after apologising for the inconvenience, they immediately asked me to return the detector & coil. I am very impressed.
Can't wait for the units return - my wife helps me with the XT-705 - in a 50/50 agreement. She gets the gold & coins & I get the iron & foil!
Once again, thanks to everyone who helped out, especially Garrett. Hopefully, some day I will be able to return the favour.
Cheers,
Gary (AKS John)
