Fast...Deep pro's and cons....

I realize deep for that deep silver and fast for trashy areas..Would like some input just what happens when you run with both on at the same time....I realize this has been hashed over time and again but let me know what works for you for deep silver...

Dan, you know we all tend to swear that our settings are the best so all others need to be discarded, yet I think there is a point of diminished returns when certain settings are used. For instance, I use a 8 or 9 on my gain to use deep also IMO would be an overkill. I do use fast but it is because most of my hunting is in trashy areas. The disadvantage of using fast is the tones will not be as clear and the meter may not be as accurate(according to the manual). Since I don't use deep on others can give their opinion. There are some that use both deep and fast on and do well with it. I have tested the combination of the filters on and off and in my ground I haven't been able to see a difference in depth using any particular ones but it may not be true in someone elses ground/conditions. I do like fast as it will allow faster sweep speeds/ faster recovery which is what I need in trashy areas.JMHO,

As first time out using Quickstart recovered 6 wheaties and two silvers at 6-10 inch depths..and of course no deep or fast in Quickstart...wonderful thing about Explorer it produces in many setups, just have to find what works best in your area for your type of hunting...For you fellows having problems setting up an Explorer Quickstart may be your answer and nothing more user friendly than that mode with the threshold and sens. tweaked with a press of a button or two....

Hello Dan,

If I make adjustments to my EXII in the advanced mode and then shift over to quickstart, does that mean those adjustments arent in operation?

Thank you,
Neil

This is not Dan but maybe this will help, on page 96 and 97 you can see the difference between Quickstart and Advanced. Any changes made to the Audio(volume, tone, sounds)will stay when you go to Quickstart BUT the Recover,Response and Noise will go back to Factory setting, Recovery-both fast&deep off, Response-normal, Noise-5. In Quickstart you can not access the Edit or Learn mode.

Arturo handled that one well and do remember even though the sens. will go back to -16 sem-auto it can be quickly changed to a higher parameter such as the lower 20's with either manual or sem-auto...
which should increase your depth depending on your mineralization and hunting area. Nice part of an Explorer versus many high end units facets can be changed at will without going into complicated adjustments and programs..I realize Quickstart is limited and many sort of get the feel for the unit and usually move on to advanced for more depth and stability..Remember an Explorer is only as easy or hard as you want it to be and many preset facets work fine as high is not always best...

On the video; "advanced version exploring the explorer"; they said using both fast and deep at the same time confuses the machine, because they both act like filters and if they run at the same time the machine will loose depth and start to false signal, so they say do not use both at the same time. One or the other but never both.

I like in quickstart being able to toggle between iron mask and digital instead of having to go through learn and edit also. I was wondering what remained. Ill look that up and read that well. The manual is quite a bit to digest, Im doing it in pieces.

Neil

between iron mask and digital without going through learn & edit and still keep all your setting. As for me I just push the detect button twice, about a second and I go form digital to smart screen in the Advance mode. What make me mad is when I am going to Iron Mask but I hit the noise cancel button by mistake, if I could I would disable the n/c button I never use it except when I hit it by mistake. I like changing the noise channel manualy.

I hunt in digital and go by tones...in advanced digital mode hit the iron mask button twice and it takes me to an iron mask screen similiar to smartscreen. One more press of iron mask and back to advanced digital..Minelab should have a button to go directly between screens in advanced same as in quickstart. I think the noise cancel button can do a better job than me doing it in manual but Minelab gives us that choice.

between the two screens, It's the new SE model it will go from smart to digital and back to smart when you hit the detect button. As for the older Explorer going from digital to Ironmask I just hit the back button.

but couldnt find where it said the advanced settings go back to factory presets when switching back to quickstart. Im going to try it when it stops raining, like try the various audio settings and see what happens.
I like quicksmart because I can toggle between iron mask and digital easily. Having to scroll through learn and edit in advanced is just to much button pushing each time.
The digital is just for comparison right now anyways, it seems the iron mask mode is the one to hunt in.

to factory default in Quickstart, you can test this by going to Advance setting and place the Response to audio-3 which gives any target a long and weird tone, now go to Quickstart and the weird tone will go back to normal. If you are in Advance mode on the digital screen you can hit IronMask make your adjustments then hit the detect button to go back to digital screen, NOW just keep hitting only the BACK button and you go from IronMask to Digital and back to IronMask and still be in Advance Mode and not loose your Option setting. Hope I explained myself right. Happy Trails 2U,IronMask Man

Thanks again Arturo. That was very well explained and helps me out understanding this electronic monster:)
Best of luck hunting to you sir,
NEil

It testing in my coin garden the best for the deep silver is just the deep on. But not by any big diff - just feel it's a "better" tone. I have used both on for a period of time with decent results.

Dan-Pa,
interesting mention on using fast and deep on page 54 in the SE manual; bottom right hand corner of the page...It says~

"Less accurate discrimination and target ID;
amplified signals for small targets,
response is similar to DEEP=OFF,FAST=OFF."

Small gold chains maybe ???

Anyone tried this setting out for small targets?

I tried Quickstart yesterday & found that it blanks on test pieces on the surface & won't pick them up until I raise the coil about 3-4 inches...then looses them again at about 6-8...at least in MY yard with My detector...I didn't like it...
