Fantasy location

This long and cold winter has me fantasizing about a dream metal detecting vacation. Help me out here guys and girls! If you could go anywhere in the world for two weeks of metal detecting, where would it be? Please convince me by explaining your choice.

I've put a little thought into this myself...need to do the research though...I would think if a guy was serious about finding a lot of gold, a fellow would first have to pinpoint some likely locations, say in Asia or the South Pacific wheres theres an abundance of wealthy tourists. Then, a guy should time the hunt around the prevailing weather and try to be there during or shortly after a big storm...contract local help and transportation if needed.
Travel light and move fast..almost need a person who is the trip manager back on this end keeping tabs on everything from tides to weather and travel...might even have to have that person deal with all the logistics too...so they can send your gear and a wad of local currency ahead, have it waiting at a pick up point, all you have to do is show up with what you are wearing, hunt hard, box everything up and send it back home, go to the airport and pick up your tickets at the counter, and have a second set of gear meeting you at another arrival point. That way a fellow could hunt hard and eat and sleep in transit... If a guy timed it right and worked the weather, a fellow should be able to sweep into some gold heavy spot on the heels of a big blow, clean it out and be gone while the locals are too busy dealing with the aftermath to hassle with you.

I doubt if anybody has a really good location THEY would go to, they wont post it here, but you never know, never hurts to ask...Whats yours?

I really don't know Mud. I've read of big nuggets being found in Australia and caches of old gold in Great Britain but really don't know where I'd go if the boss gave me two weeks off - probably some beach in a warm climate. BUT, jewelry comes off easier in the cold water!
Australia is a huge place and you could probably spend two weeks and find zip - same for Great Britain.

I do know that since I found that large cent last year, I'm more inclined to spend less time digging clad and more time scouring sites that have the potential for old stuff.

Fantasy, ummmm Fort knox I guess.lol. one these years I hope to take the misses on a caribean vacation like maybe aruba or US virgin islands ,somewhweres like that where your not likely to get mugged. Dont know if I will ever get there again but I can dream. I have found a fair amount of large cents thru the years and I can say I get more enjoyment from finding just 1 large cent than I do from finding a pocket full of clad. For me hunting the parks for clad is something I do just to stay in practice while waiting for the farm fields the open. Happy hunting.

Kalgoorlie Western Australia. Yahoo I'm still picking up small sun bakers and gram nuggets are only inches deep. What an amazing place!

:surprised: Kalgoorlie it is, Mac!:beers: Nice work Ceebee7! I bet its bloody hot out there right now eh? Get us some pictures and a write up of your hunt to get us through this polar vortex!:please:

It is legally impossible and probably more than that, But if I could find a way to legally hunt at Gettysburg, PA, where my Great grandfather and his brother fought for Culp's hill, I would make reservations today... ust wishing. Company F, 8th Louisiana Infantry, CSA

I spent three years in the eastern end of the island of Puerto Rico. Loved it down there. Did not detect back then. Now I would love to have a couple of weeks down there to work some of those beaches and places that I visited. I would especially like to go back and hit the base at Roosevelt Roads. Its warm enough that one can get in the water without having to look like he had been dipped in rubber and still not get cold. We would go scuba diving during the winter and only had to put on a T Shirt for warmth.

Better make it a month or two. Two weeks would not be any where near long enough.

Thanks for the replies guys!
CeeBee7, you have me intrigued. Just what is a "sun baker"? Kalgoorie is going on my top-ten list. Thank you Mate! As Mudpuppy said, I hope you'll tell us more about this intriguing place.

Bootyhoundpa and GeorgeinSC you're on to something. The Caribbean has those beautiful green waters, soft sand, and miles and miles of beaches. Plus, the Puerto Ricans love to wear bling! I once went to an all-inclusive in Jamacia and they took us out on a boat to the reef to do some snorkeling. While I was snorkeling a Jamacian $50 bill came out of my pocket and settled on the bottom near the boat. When I came up for air, the driver excitedly told me about the $50. I went down and got it, brought it back up, handed it to him and said, "It's yours". He was a happy, happy man and so was I. A few days earlier, the wife and I had gone horseback riding in the surf and a NJ newlywed bride who was along on the ride was behaving like a brat and berating the guides. She made my wife and I embarrassed to be Americans so in giving the boat driver the $50, I was hoping to spread some good will.
The Caribbean is also going on my top 10 list.

CDSmith46, I hear you. Nothing invokes deeper feelings than a visit to a battlefield. It must be even more emotional knowing that your kin fought there. I can only imagine what it's like at Gettysgurg never having been there but if it's anything like the places I've visited like Antietam and the Revolutionary War Battlefield at Saratoga, where the hair on the back of your neck stands up and you get goose bumps on a hot summer day, I understand your desire to swing a coil there. Good luck.

CDSmith46, I did some pondering about your wish to metal detect at Gettysburg. I'm not sure that could ever happen but if you want to pursue it perhaps you should consider getting into archeology. They may do digs around there and if you were to volunteer to help, you'd make friends and contacts in the archeology field and who knows where it could lead from there. Just food for thought.

Thanks for the idea. There is a special md training done yearly at Montpelier, but it is on a very selective group, and it is for archeology. You can learn to accurately date any nails that you might dig in a historical locale, and other such niceties. While it is interesting in the utmost, I am 67, with back problems and diabetes, and my memory is slowly going south. BUT if I were younger, I would be on it like a hog on slop. Someone on here ought to google it and look into it. It is a rare opportunity to become a real pro...
