falsing

:poke:mybuddy stuck it to me'',,55 to 25 i've always beat him on landbut at the beach he won. my problem was much falsing with my sovxs, 1996 model. was my first time on beach. every thing was modern coins except two rings he found, one junk, one class rind with full name of girl. ring was lost about one week. one happy little girl. please helllp anyone.

Two things in combination.......

Really 3 things, but I doubt you want to reduce coil size......

Keep your sweep speed slow....3 seconds or longer per sweep....
And back the sensitivity down enough to stop the falsing.

Really about the same rules as dirt hunting. Keep disc and notch full CCW so you don't miss rings.

If you're hitting streaks of black sand you will get falsing. I agree that turning down the sensitivity is a good place to start.

Second also on slowing down the sweep speed.

You could even try turning discrimination up a little. I have the same machine and when I've had falsing on black sand, turning up the disc a little was enough to minimize it.

I agree to try to run the sensitivity lower and possibly in auto and try swinging a little slower too. You didn't mention what your experience with the Sovereign is as how long you use it, what kind of setting you used and how deep you been picking up coins on land. For beach use it will be different than land use, but if you know your Sovereign well on land I feel you should have no problem on the beach.
When I start getting any falsing I find that when I get a signals I will try to wiggle the coil back until the signal is right under the tip of the coil, then being I know where it should be I come at it from a different angle and if it null or moves I will move on too. If it is still in the same spot and sounds goo we know it is good.

Good Luck,

Rick

I use my Sov on salwater beaches and it goes really deep.

Sometimes my machine will sound like it's falsing but what is really happening is it's reading a really deep coin or ring and gives one beep but can't lock onto the target.

If I get a blip like that I stop and dig a wide depression with my scoop over where the 'false' signal was (about two or three inches deep). Most of the time it's a good target that was too deep to lock onto and when I get a couple inches closer it locks in and I keep digging until I find it.

Sometimes iron or stainless steel will give a good blip in disc but then nothing. You can switch to 'all metal' and see if it hits hard in that mode. If your threshold goes silent in disc mode but the audio blips once you're over iron or steel.

With my Sunray meter, iron (and steel bottle caps) always peg down into negative numbers even if I'm getting blip from it on disc.

I agree that the 'wiggle' should be used on a iffy signal. If there is a good target you'll get a repeatable signal. Changing 90 degrees or even 180 degrees helps with finding targets while using the 'wiggle'.

Could be your machine isn't falsing at all but is doing one or more of the above.

the sensitivity some..............i use mine around 1pm on the clock face.............manual only

did u get the coil wet ??..............if yes u may have a hole in it, it will false alot after getting wet...........will work on dry ok and damp.........what kind of coil is it?

thanks a lot guys for all the information about falsing from my sovxs . i was hunting on dauphin island 30 miles south of me. don,t know anything about black sand, but will try again. my settings at the time was notch and disc. zero. sensitivity about 2 oclock. hh::)

When you try that beach again and you get 'falsing', switch the sensitivity to 'auto' and see if you still get 'false' signals. If not, you can be reasonably sure that the sensitivity setting was the problem.

Switch it back to manual and turn it, incrementally, down (clockwise) until the falsing stops. That will be the point you've 'tuned' the machine to maximum sensitivity for the beach.

Remember though, different mineral conditions (even at the same beach) can change so the setting you have one day might not be optimal the next week. Manually tune your sensitivity every time.

I hope I explained all that right. Other members will jump in and refine or expand on my explaination if I left something out.

If you have a coil cover, take it off and clean out any sand or salt deposits which have accmulated in it. Make sure the connection between the coil wire and the electronics box is nice and snug too.

Good luck!
