falsing with non-ground balance MD in mountains

My wife and I were MD'ing in some mountainous wooded areas in Virginia this past weekend. Her Cutlass II

That's one of the main reasons that if you are going to have only one machine, you should pick a model with either good auto ground (not preset) tracking or manual ground balancing capability. I have several preset ground Tesoros similar to your Cutlass II that work quite well in most of the areas I hunt, in fact deep and quiet in the local parks and fairground, but on beaches along a river near here the sand contains a fair bit of mineralization and the detectors false a bit. Two things to try - turn the sensitivity down and/or use the discrimination to discriminate out the offending signal. Or course that will affect depth, but you may still be able to hunt reasonably if the problem not too severe, in spite of that.

Very typical of granite and other high mineral rock and also some coals from a camp fire. Exactly like the two responses above. Also, when I go to hunt tot lots and there is a gravel parking lot, I may hunt the wood chips with the Compadre and then grab the Tejon or another detector with ground balance to adjust to the gravel in the parking lot. With out adjusting the ground balance to the rocks, very little if anything gets found in the gravel.

While the compadre is a great detector. There are locations where GB is a must.

hotrocks,

^^^^^^ this^^^^^^ when prospecting hot rocks & pockets of minerals cause falsing (+ hiting rocks with your coil) on MDers, that is why the machines like the Super LOBO were developed. To better handle this issue & to keep you from having to ground balance every 3 feet on a manual GB machine. Or miss alot with a preset GB machine.
