False signals?

victorlee

New member
Hello everybody. I am new to the hobby, new to this forum, and I just received my AT PRO two weeks ago. I suspect that I am way behind the curve with this question but I need some help. Has anyone had problems with false signals? If I let the coil bump the ground - false signal. If it bumps into a stick or weed - false signal. This is the first metal detector I have ever owned and I am at a total loss as to what to do about all of the false signals.Even if I hold the coil up in the air and rotate my wrist back and forth it gives false signals. What should I do?

Call Garrett and explain the problem. Their customer service is tops.

I don't have an AT PRO but I do have a Garrett and mine falses when I lift/tilt the coil or bump stuff when the coil is over iron. It took me a good week and a half of pretty much constant use to get my swing level and steady. I still get falses on occasion when I try and extend my sweep too far or hit a thick patch of tall grass that tilts my coil but its rare.

Go back and recheck your coil connection to make sure its properly seated.......make sure the coil wire isn't loose and flopping around the shaft, try turning down your sensitivity, make sure you've got the machine properly ground balanced ......maybe slow your swing down to warp 3 and quit hitting the ground and stay out of patches of tall grass.......... if all else fails maybe the coils bad.........if the first 4 doesn't help do as Forrest Mc suggest and contact "Garrett and explain the problem. Their customer service is tops".

If the suggestions suggested below don't help resolve the problems, give Garrett a call, ask for Sue and have your serial number ready. She will look after you. :)

Thank you for all the suggestions. I did email customer service at Garrett and I'm waiting for a reply. Very funny 1/4 horse, are you a professional comedian?

[size=large]Vickories, welcome to the forums. what ever you think 1/4 horse can be a great help. he has a sense of humor. most like and enjoy it.
one thing i found wasn't mentioned was to be sure your cam-locks are tight. the coil plug idea is very very valid. that was also a problem i encountered. luckly for me my ATP tot'n hunting buddy already new what to check for and i was good to go. frankly the plugs could of been made a little beefer.jmo

Hello, there is something that may not have been mentioned, it affects lots of detectors... Make sure that your coil cord does not have excess slop in it. Wrap it around the shaft without play if you can. It made a big difference on my AT Pro.

Also...Did you buy the detector new or used??? If it is newer model, it SHOULD have the cam locks and the extended upper shaft...If not, you got someones throw away old one that they were too lazy to send back to Garrett for upgrades...The old machines had some problems...

HH,

Just got my ATPRO,but I have owned several other makes and models. The first thing I would do is remove and clean out the coil cover.I have noticed with mine that it collects beach sand quickly and I will be sealing mine up with silicone very shortly.Im sure you will love this detector once you get used to it.HH,John.
