false signals?

Hey guys,

I will get a good 10-21, i have also had a real solid 12-44,45 and have the target end up being some rusty bolt or nail. Is this normal? This seems to happen a lot more in my backyard than any where else. When I pass the coil over the target it will give me the good signal for 3 to 4 passes then it might jump a bit but go right back to the good numbers. I have rechecked my holes and nothing else in there. I have only had the machine for a few weeks, maybe I just need to get used to the tones a bit more??

Thanks

I've had numbers with good sound at 12-47 12-48 and was sure I would have found a quarter or hopefully a half dollar, but have been a good old rusty bolt. When you get a hit like that turn 90 degrees and see if it repeats or nulls out. If it is a coin, more times than not it will repeat, if it is rusty crappe it will not register. At least that is what I do anymore. Sometimes I still dig just hoping for a goodie being hidden by the crusty rusty stuff.

HH and goodluck

Try using the quick mask screen to check your target. If the ferrous numbers jump up high it is probably a piece of iron. Of course the down side is a coin right next to a a piece of iron sounds almost identical. You will find a lot more iron than you will a coin next to iron though.

Phil, I do use quick mask and watch the ferus no.s but was wondering if 28 is too high in your book to be a coin?

If I get a reading under 30, I also check to see if the target pinpoints in the same place I get the coin reading. If the iron is a nail or irregularly shaped piece, the coin hit will be off of an edge so the target will pinpoint in a slightly different spot. Old harness rings fool me cause they pinpoint in the same spot. I've also noticed that coin falses off nails sound like a deep coin but when you pinpoint they sound shallower.

Thanks guys... I will try these things out tonight! I think I might be forcing my machine to give me a good signal. I will hear quick hit for a sec but not repeatable and I will work it until I pretty much make it give me a signal. Does that make any sense to you? Do you give up on iffy hits right away or do you work them for a bit (just passing the coil over the target)?

I work iffy signals too..But i go into all metal to work iffy signals..Then use pinpoint to get an idea of the size/location of the target. With some practice you will eliminate digging iron 90% of the time..Just takes more time on your detector..You will Have it figured out in No time flat :) Good Luck HH
