I seriously doubt the ATX outfit including the detector is fake for many reasons.

The cost of the tooling to make a fake ATX with the relatively low sales volume would be insane.

The seller has been a eBay member for four years and has 100% positive feedback.

Not only that, but whoever purchases it and is not satisfied for ANY reason, all they have to do is file a dispute and eBay will force the seller to refund the purchase price.

The eBay Buyer Protection Plan with a Money Back Guarantee really screws the seller by freezing the money in their PayPay account until the dispute is settled. I have been there with a scammer buyer that I sold something too. The buyer said that the item didn't work and I sold it As-Is/No returns, it did work when I shipped it, and eBay still made me return the purchase price and pay to have it shipped back. The seller get screwed every time by eBay!!

And the $1700 selling price is inline for a used ATX.

Ok this is not a problem. My ATX has almost flat front panel... this not. So I'm just curius, about differnece. That is all.

I have the bumpier screen on mine, I haven't seen a smooth screen. might be because mine is one of the first units?

I think the detector is genuine for all the same reasons noted by SoCalBeachScanner above. Looks to me like the seller took the picture - likely with a flash - and then edited the contrast to make it darker. The bumps may be pixels, as the lettering is also blurry.

I know my ATX looks exactly like what you see in the picture and I have registered mine with Garrett so I'd say I'm 99.99% confident it's real :) if not, it sure works nice for a copy!

I know the Chinese are good at making cheap but good looking replicas. I don't see anything here that suggests it's a fake.

You have totally right, but one month ago Police found illegal Minelab factory ;) so you know ;)

We looked into the Minelab 5000 and there was an article on line how to confirm it being genuine or not and using a "tool" to view some hologram type stickers

The best advice is contact Garrett once you receive it and review the detector piece by piece

Good Luck
