Got my X-Terra back from Minelab today:stretcher:.The speaker on it has been malfunctioning for most of the time I've had it(since November).I've never really been that concerned about it, as I have only seen it as an inconvenience because I felt that the detector operated normally otherwise. How wrong was I.
Although I have always loved this detector's layout and control box performance, I have also been fairly ticked off by the lacklustre performance of the coil's ability to tell me where a target is under it, to the point that I bought a Pocket UnProbe to compensate for this lack of information. (that was a long sentence.)
Anyway; the long and the short of it is that Minelab found an intermittent connection, so cleaned and re soldered it.The end result is, that I now have a properly functioning coil again:hot:.Wow!What a difference it makes. It is now possible to tell where under the coil a target is, whether in pinpoint mode or not.Just going to need to spend some time practicing and relearning how the target hits different parts of the coil.
Moral of the story is this.If you do have a problem like this, don't put up with it.Get it looked at sooner rather than later and save yourself a lot of grief.I wouldn't have considered that such an apparent innocuous problem could cause so much grief!

Every once in a while on my x50 it will lose its sound all togather. The id numbers will still display correctly but I will not get any sound. I thought it may have just been a loose connection to the back of the unit. But even after making sure it was tight it will sometimes just stop giving any sound from the speakers. Should I send it in?

Absolutely! It's still under warranty and this was a common problem when they first came out.
Particularly if you are having problems trying to pinpoint properly.I was getting a generalised pinpoint under the middle section of the coil, but not much tone information.I'm now finding that the pinpoint is now dropping out predictably.I also now get 4 distinct beeps as I pass the middle of the coil over a target, as opposed to 2 before. The coil response is now a lot sharper over the entire coil now.
I suspect that the real problem may have been dirt on the circuit board or something similar(just like you can't start your car sometimes due to dirty battery terminals). The fault that was found was the headphone socket was intermittent. This was fixed and the surrounding area cleaned.I think that it was the cleaning of the area that did the trick.Just my best guess as I'm electronically ignorant.
If you are still getting a sharp response from your coil, then it's up to you whether you want to worry about it.I posted about this experience so that if anybody else has been going through this, then there is a solution.
All the best,
Mick Evans.
