Faint signals

New member
I was at a sight that dates back to the late 1700's. I assume it has been well worked it's a park.Dug a bunch of pull tops.
Got a faint signal in disc mode started to dig , checked the hole again no signal in disc but has faint signal in all metal.
Soil was very dry dug up to my elbow still faint signal middle of hole. I had to leave for home. the signal was not large.
Can mineralized soil give a false signal? Using a sov elite.
Thanks Scot

Scot did you use a pin pointer?A good pin pointer will help find those deep targets and avoid ghost targets.

Big Target, deep....Been there done that..........house from the late 1800's, post hole digger, 30 minutes digging....finally got the target about 3+ feet deep...Large piece of tin roofing

Don't think will let me use a post hole digger in the park.May wait until we get some rain and take a probe. Don't have a pinpointer.
Thanks Scott

Three things can cause phantom deep signals like this....Very deep large target, presenting a small spot because it's so deep, iron off to the side or even on both sides of the "target" which can cause a false coin hit between them or off the side of just one object, third would be the soil in that area being very hot for some reason. I've ran acrossed what seems at first to be multiple coin hits in say a one or two foot square area. You can tell by the ghostly response of them and them all seeming to be the same depth (loudness) that it's phantom signals and not coins. Trying to pin point one of those signals will seem almost impossible, and the coin ID when wiggling at it doesn't seem to have any defined target area.

A Pro Pointer or a Sunray probe is a must for any Minelab IMO.

Had U elevated your coil ABOVE the target until the sound was lost then U would have known pretty much the size of the target. Unless U were hunting cache's or relics it would have been obvious that it wasn't a coin or ring

Don't know what U do but I own, manage and maintain 15 rentals and run a goat ranch in my spare time. If I wasn't electronically challenged and had the time I would do a U tube 4 U but gotta go hunt up some more rings PS started water/land hunting in 62(no pic's)
