F75 Mode Question for Relic Hunt

Brainwasher

New member
I'm getting ready to take my new F75 out for a spin at the end of the month in Louisiana. I have permission to hunt a small wooded area where I have found a couple of three ring civil war bullets in the past with my MXT, but the last time I was there, it seems I had cleared out all the signals. I believe there is more to find at this site, but it's just very deep. I don't think I'll have any problem running the F75 at pretty high sensitivity levels and I don't expect much if any interference from outside sources. I noticed the "Discrimination Mode" using the "JE Process" seems to be the hot setting many posts are recommending. However, I noticed the manual mentioned that using the discrimination mode would incur some loss of sensitivity to small or deep objects. Since this area doesn't contain much trash, would I be better off using high sensitivity in the "Motion All Metal Mode" to find the deepest targets, or will the "JE Process" in the "Discrimination Mode" still be more likely to find those deepest targets? This will probably be my last chance to hunt this site for years, so I really want to make the most of it. Any opinions on whether I would get the most depth from the "Motion All Metal Mode" or the "Discrimination Mode with JE process" would really be appreciated. Thanks. jeff

Try this:

Start in the DE mode. Default discrimination, 2 tones, 90 to 99 on the sensitivity. Use a moderate sweep speed.

Yes it will be a bit noisy, but there will be no doubt in your mind when you pass over an accepted target. Most of the noise is coming from ground noise, so the targets sound out loud & clear. Even in trash with set this way, one can tell the difference between trash, lead, coins.

If in loose soil use the PF mode.

motion all metal is the best option to use for the deep targets. I have gone through all the programs on the discriminative side and again the motion all metal seemed to find the deep targets the best. The F75 is great at sniffing out deep targets that lye in the bottom of hut floors!!!!

Hmmm, interesting. Two dynamically different opinions to the same question by two experienced hunters. Thanks for the input guys. If I find some deep signals I'll try both modes on them and see which one seems to work better for me and post my results when I get back. Anyone else have any different suggestions? Thanks. jeff

I think you'll find there isnt a terrible amount of difference in the raw depth you'll get between all-metal...OR disc mode.
There are advantages to both modes however, depending on where your searching...and the sheer amount of trash or mineralization.
You wont find much of a difference in depth between Je mode or De mode.....but you WILL find a difference in the response of certain targets between the two modes. Lower condustors WILL hit harder in Je mode............but wont necesarily be deeper. The 75 will just be more sensitive to them.
All metal mode offers distinct advantages in bad soil.......and I'd recommend it if your in an area where the dirt if highly mineralized. Motion all metal is often smoother and quieter than disc is too, but if the grounds REALLY busy...it can give you quite the headache. I'd probably use one of the disc modes for most hunting situations (in My soil type around here....
Je is my preferred mode)......and use the all metal motion mode for bad soil...or when your hunting an area where targets are sparse.........and you want to hear every little peep.
Truth is.....................both Bill and Steve are right. Both modes have their strengths......................and its up to you to figure out which better suits YOUR needs in the area your hunting. One of the problems in giving advice on the forums concerning "best" settings.........is that what works for one in any given area may not work for another. the 75 gives you tools to get the best out of it no matter where you hunt.......but you have to determine yourself what does the best job in your area.
I tend to agree with Bill...............................start off in De mode with as high a sens setting as you can muster. Graduate from that to JE mode.....with a very low disc setting like 5 or 6. Dont worry about the "boost" from your disc setting....as the 'Boost" is active 100% of the time in JE. I prefer two tones..............but when the going gets tough.............and the targets are few....I use monotone. Dig every "iffy target". Hope this helps a bit. Let us know how you make out!!

Great info guys..I will try them all above but with 0 disc till to noisey..I have a huge Hunt in the works..Cant wait..

I agree. I haven't hit any "old" lead, but I have a musket ball buried at 12" in my test garden and I hit that solidly in dE mode. If you feel lucky lower the discrimination below 5 and it will be PLENTY sensitive even if you have to drop the senitivity setting below 40. Jewelry is a hot mode, but it's just to "sparky" for my tastes. I'm used to a silent search mode. I have pulled a lot of lead in the form of 7/8 & 1 oz deer slugs (and handfulls of .22LR bullets) out of my land and nearby farms (200 years of deer hunters = one Civil War skirmish  ) using the default & PF (plowed field) settings. It's actually something I collect as I cast round lead balls for muzzleloading and lead is lead.

All right, I finally got to go on that relic hunt to Louisiana. I hunted two days straight and found only one three ring bullet I had missed from my previous hunts with the MXT, but one more is definitely better than no more. Here are my findings as to whether the DE mode or the all metal mode is best for relic hunting at that location. I believe it is likely that I would have been able to find deeper targets in the all metal mode because I could hear the ground changing all the time, and any slight change would have gotten my attention. The problem is the listening to the ground changing all day long pretty much drove me crazy, so after awhile I changed the discrimination mode to hunt under quieter conditions. I was able to hunt with the sensitivity at 99 with no problems, and no interference. In fact I ended up hunting in the Je mode for quite a bit of the time. The one three ring bullet I found was only about four inches deep, and I found it in the DE mode, but I'm sure I would have found it in the all metal mode had I been using it at the time. So the best settings for relic hunting....can't really say. I think it boils down to personal preference, but I definitely do appreciate all the advice I received on this before the hunt. On a side note, I did find a silver dime and two wheat pennies, so I'm very pleased about finding my first silver and first civil war relic with the F75, while still on my first set of batteries.

Go to STAT MODE and do a manual ground balance. And bring along a REAL long handled shovel.

Vlad, I really wish I had tried out the stat mode. It was a perfect opportunity to use it, but I didn't think about it. Maybe next time I'll take your fowl bet.

Yea try the Stat mode vlad what tresh and audio you using..it humms like a transformer and zips zips..so you have found its Deeper
that any Disc mode and the all metal motion..I noticed Bill ladd seems to hunt in all metal motion/stat..???

The threshold is preset, and you can only change the pitch of your [one] tone. The only thing about the Stat mode is that it does drift and you need to constantly retune, and FISHER needs to add a very slow auto-tune to it in a future chip. I guess Bill Ladd has not seen the necessity of the Stat mode and the All Metal mode does what he needs. Maybe at a future date he might try it. I've used it in places with a huge amount of fill dirt.
