F70

Hello, I'm somewhat new to detecting. I just bought the Fisher F70 and I like it so far. One problem I'm having is I've been getting really good signals and will dig and dig and still get the same signal, sometimes even better, after digging many times close to 15+ inches. I used to have an ooooold garret from about 15-20 years ago. Forgot the model but i think it was a TR type. But it did the same thing, is seems like when i got over a deep hole, it would give off a huge signal. Does it have something to do with ground balancing? I have rebalanced several times and nothing changes. Tried changing the Hz as well as gain, thresh, etc... Sometimes it starts off showing 3 or so inches, then in the hole it will say another 8-10.
Please let me know if you have any thoughts.

p.s.
I found my first silver dime today as well as a silver earring with this f70. I love it.

are you sure you are digging in the right spot? what coil are you using? each coil is different for the pinpointing spot.

If you're off a little on your pinpointing you could dig forever. Meanwhile the coin is off to the side a little.

Pretty sure its the right spot. I've made the holes big enough to fit the coil inside the hole and move the coil around the inside of the hole. It then pinpoints in the center of the hole. It doesnt act like its a huge target, I've dug up enough coke cans to somewhat understand target size. At least I think. (although I did dig one up that was almost 10 inches deep). And I'm just using the factory coil. I am interested in getting the F75 11" DD coil I keep hearing about though, I want to get used to this one first.

It could be iron but what I would do first is go to a park with grass and throw a few coins on the ground and pin point them and see if you can find them. If you can and you do know how to recover coins then it could be the area you are hunting that has iron.

Randy,

Anyone who has been detecting for a while has fallen victim to the "phantom" target. You get that solid repeatable signal that reads high on the scale but when you dig down to the depth the detector indicates there is nothing there. You keep digging deeper and deeper until you are almost up to your elbow. When you sweep the detector over the hole the signal remains strong.
It could be that you just mis-pinpointed and the target is just to one side or the other. Usually, not the case. Next time you get one of these phantom signals raise your detector about 4 or 5 inches over the hole, sweep the coil and see what happens. If the signal remains strong, the target is usually something very large buried very deep under the ground. If the signal disappears when you raise the coil you may want re-pinpoint and continue to investigate the hole a little further.
