F70 to complement my F5

Hey all,

I recently purchased a F70 to complement my F5 and so far I

looks like your off to a good start. i really miss my f70 it was my first quality detector keep at it and it will find the good stuff hh

Nice finds.:clapping:..those two should get along real well...is that a folded over shotgun base?

Thanks. I think the F70 will give me the added depth I'm looking for. From what I can tell from reading other posts, and the data gained from my F5s ground reading capabilities, the ground in my area is not the easiest to penetrate. Already the F70 has shown it offers me more depth of detection in disc. Just how much remains to be seen.

Sorry Mud it's not a shot gun base. In the picture it does look like one though. Not sure what it is, beyond it being a solid piece of cast metal that's heavier then aluminium yet lighter than lead?

Yes the F5 is still a keeper, in the short time I've had it, its found me 3 gold rings and a few newer silver coins and silver jewelry, not to mention a boat load of clad coinage.

In addition, in our unfriendly soil I feel the F5 is a bit lacking in depth. But having said that, where it does shine is on our wet salt water beaches. I haven't found a wet salty beach yet that the F5 won't easily GB on easily with the Ground Grab button. On the other hand from my interpretation of the F70 capabilities in it's user manual (Note on page -13, right lower corner) the F70 won't GB using Ground Gab on wet salty beaches. So when the tides out, it's the F5, in all other cases it looks like I'll be using the F70.

PS: If the F70 can be GB via another method for use on WET salty beaches please let me know!

theres no way to manually ground balance the f70 thats one of the reasons i switched to the t2se then a f75se all you can do is ground grab and see how it does if you spend alot of time on the beach you should probebly get a multi freq or pi beach machine will work much better good luck hh

Wow Knarfj. I didn't realize there was that much difference between the F5 and the F70 when it came to depth. I like to watch the videos Bill S. has a few threads down when he is at the deep clad park. His depth with the 5 blows my mind. He must have nearly perfect ground mineralization there. I sure would like to have a 5 with a 5"x8" DD to go with my 70:thumbup:

Yes, I too was amazed at the depth Bill S. was finding coins with the F5. The man sure puts out a lot of effort in his videos and for the most part I too enjoy watching them.

But upon closer observation of said F5 video I noticed he has no (Fe3o) bars showing on the F5 screen during the entire video.

Correct me if I

Fe3o meter is an indication for the presents of iron oxides. I don't have an Fe3o meter on the F70 but a dirt meter instead which probably would reflect a similarity to each other in some way if I understood both function a little better. But I'm not there yet, still a lot to learn. All I know is my dirt meter is higher when my ground balance is somewhat off. Is it possible, that when there are no or fewer bars in the Fe3o meter it means there is dirt with little or no iron oxide content rather than not much dirt as in depth between the coil and target. Seem to me if it is an iron oxide meter and there is not much content in the soil the reading would be less than an area with high mineralization even on a deep target. This would also explain why he is getting so much depth at that location. I don't know, just asking.

I'm at the same level of understanding as you are IB with what the dirt meter is trying to tell me on the F70. In fact I hardly take notice of it when I'm hunting, I just periodically check (listen) on how well the detector is ground balanced by using the PP button. Hmmmm? Now you've put a bug in my ear. I may be ignoring a valuable tool!

Yes I do the same but I must say I am a big fan of the confidence meter especially when trying to bust look alike trash like bottle caps and folded foil. There's another neat little trick I learned from a writing by Mike H. that is possible because of a common trait that the F70 and F5 share. If you push the pinpoint button over clean ground, and there is a straight line in the display and no audio, that is indicating there is no depth to measure on any target. That means GB is good. If a depth number appears and you hear the pinpointing sound but there is no target, you need to do a new GB. I do all GB in the autotone mode.

Yes, yes! I have read that before but never remember to give it a go when I out in the field. Will have to pin a note on my jacket front.

Yup, I tried the string around the finger trick but that don't work because I usually have a senior moment and I forget why I have a string on my finger:rage: Oh!! and when you go to pin the note on make damn sure you have a jacket or shirt on:yikes:

The wife won't let me have sharp things so I used a different method. I put one of those sticky notes on my screen and then went out for a couple of hours today but got skunked bad. I'm sure I'd have done better but for that sticky pad being in the way. Maybe next time.

But on a more positive note I did remember to use the trick you suggested to verify my F70 was still correctly GB for the patch of ground I was working and it worked great. Very handy trick to know. Thanks for sharing!
