F70 settings

RTG

New member
I know this has been discussed before, just can't really find what I'm needing. (this will probably be a really dumb and basic question) I have an F70 and I like detecting around old farm houses/sites, etc. Say there's a coin right next to a piece of iron, screw, whatever... I can't seem to find a good setting to be able to pick up the coin, as the trash seems to cancel it out. Is there such a setting or way to disc out the trash better? I've tried the delta pitch but it doesn't seem to help much. I have been practicing with a coin and trash at different distances apart from each other. At about an inch apart I can somewhat get a signal on the coin but closer than that it's no good. Is this where "notching" comes in to play? If so I can't figure that out either. Thanks

What settings are you using ? If I'm on an old home site, I keep my disc - 0 , that way I still keep multi-tone. Or use "at" and adjust
my thresh hold until I can just barely hear it. Hope fully one of the guys w/ some serious time on a F70/F75 can come to the rescue. You've got me wondering what I've been missing myself. I've been taking it for granted, that when I close the door on the refrig, the light goes out LOL
Seriously, I don't use notching myself, as you can notch out more than you want. Depends on what you are searching for. heres something from Elton on notching a F75 that may help you understand. Since the F70 is the little bro, I'm thinking it will work for it the same way.

It really is simple..the manual appears to make it difficult..and that's only because they forgot to stress the Fixed set of numbers for notching abilities.

In other words if your detecting in a park.. your using Discrimination at 25. all of a sudden your getting a lot of one type of pull tabs. Say it falls in the
#38 Target ID.. Over and over again..You go to notch..press menu dial to the number 38..and press menu. A dash will darken up above on the left side of the tab name on display. You removed the Number 38...but you also removed 36, 37,39,40,41,42,43,44,45.....Because the notch is set up in a fixed set of numbers on each target category..36 through 45 is the lower half of factory set notch numbers in tabs area... You will always remove all factory set numbers when notching out target numbers that is above your discrimination setting...You will always be putting the numbers in with notch if they are lower than your discrimination setting. You need to know these notch fixed numbers to understand the notch system.

Now if your running Discrimination at 40..then the notch system is designed to do just the opposite of Discrimination..So 36 37 38 39 40 will be notched in..
41 42 43 44 45 will be notched out. Notch always does the opposite of the Discrimination. So if you want all the fixed numbers in tabs on lower half out..Move your discrimination to 36 (Get your discrimination number at the lowest fixed number) in the range you want to remove. Before, you set the notch.. It's your choice..but you have to work the two systems together for full benefits.

I think a smaller coil , either the 5" dd or the 6x4 is the answer you are looking for. I had a CZ-6A w/ a 5" coil, it would pick the coins out of a bucket of nails. It will be a slower search but thats why they call it treasure hunting. Racings for Nascar. Good luck

To get close to Iron you need the 11"DD Coil, with my f-70 has a DD coil I have no problem finding coins next to Iron.HH

Lots of great answers, thanks!
Sookie, I've pretty much tried everything I can think of EXCEPT using aT and disc 0. Except once, I think, and it wasn't a good experience. Just something I need to try again and practice with more. The notching does seem to be an odd critter, but that seemed to explain it much better.
I have also been thinking about getting a 5" coil. I keep seeing now that it may be my answer. But then again, the places I'm going, Im finding stuff at 6-10" deep. That is with the 11" DD. So Cacheman, what settings do you use with your 11"?
Thanks again.

As opposed to notching, the varying coils will have different levels of success in your case in point. And as opposed to coils and settings, if you suspect a good target near a bad target, dig it! If you want more clarity, try to swing the coil at an angle across the target(s) or use pinpoint to determine if there are two targets close to each other.

You might want to try lifting the coil a bit to see if you get better target separation also. Lots of ways to win that good coin from the ground!

I agree with Cache. The best method for better seperation id to use the DD coils. Get the 11" and the 5". The 5" has approximately 1 1/2 - 2" less depth than the 11" coil, which is pretty remaarkable depth for a 5" coil. I can pick up a freshly buried clad dime at 6" with the little coil. My soil is heavily mineralized to boot. Reads .3 on the iron meter, which is rather high.

I just got back in...running disc at 20, DP tones...anyway, those tight coin spills, and stacked coins give a wierd sound, but with practice, a guy can stab 'em and work from the outside in...I'm really seriously hunting for jewelry, but these dang coins keep getting in the way..the only realy cool one is the bicentennial JFK half...the rest is clad, and the jewery junk...anyway, thats 127 coins, for 10.11..go get the gold tomorrow! HH!
