F70 hunting with a E-trac

After-1-

New member
The pres of the club I belong to has a E-trac--(Beaver County Detecting Club) Nice club-------I asked if he would like to come to a ball field -playground that I went to as a kid ----late 50's. I have been there with my CZ and the F70. With the F70 maybe 10hrs and have found only the newer coins,no silver,no wheats,no rings, just newer coins. the only change to the area is the ballfield is now a soccer field and the basket ball court has been replaced with stupid tot hurt your knee wood chip play area. The place is a easy 2 acres. Ok, when we get there I ask him when he gets a good hit to let me check it,no problem the F70 and the E-trac showed the same on -Qs Ds Ns Ps------all 3-5 inches deep.We hunted about 2 hrs and I found 7 coins and he found 12 coins, THe good part about this is he found a Wheaty 1949 about 4-5 inches deep. My settings were Pro1--Dis 9-------Spd- SL-----SEN 66----Thres -4 Tones 3 Notch 5------------Pro 2-Dis 19 Spd de Sen 68 Thres -9------Tones 3 Notch 20--------I have the NEL sharpshooter coil----- My thoughts are there has to be silver there, the place does get detected, not a lot. If I were to put all the area that I have covered in to sq ft my guess would be maybe 60 sq ft, I loose sleep over this playground as to where and why no silver ------I really don't want to bring the D10R ------lol--------Any thoughts on attacking this playground --------Thanks ----------After1---------

I wish I had a good answer for you but silver is really hard to find in our area here in wv, my advice is work an area for a reasonable time and if hour not finding any wheaties or silver pack up and move on. Also look in the wooded areas around the open areas, that's where we are finding most of our silver. By the way ,welcome to the forum.

Perhaps it has been cherry picked already?

I know the same would happen in our city park. If you were to hunt it today you'd find a lot of clad down to about 5-6" but little beyond that. My buddies and I have cherry picked the park hard with our E-Tracs and many other models pulling nothing less than 6" deep. Lots and lots of wheats and silver. Today you'd be lucky to find a single wheat much less a piece of silver.

still looking--------Silver is hard to find here too, This report is from yesterday, and I have really slowed up swing pattern,a lot of over laps. The age of the area and knowing the number of soft ball and baseball games, plus kids playing from 9 am till dark, this was a happening play ground.I have not just started hunting this area this year. For the number of hours that I have put in ( bought my first detector 20 yrs ago)and only seen (1) wheat and that was yesterday. Not giving up ------after1------

The Sharpshooter is a good coil but if the area isn't loaded with trash then I suggest a jump to the 11" DD coil, what this would do is give you better coverage in the ground around the silver range, in better coverage I mean less likely to just miss a target that is in the 4" to 6" depth range.
Next,
Most people that hunt an area like a field will use a pattern to block it off by the layout of the field, (squared off) being that's its been hunted then you can be sure that's been the primary approach. To change things a bit use a different approach, look at the field and work it caddy corner (diagonally) also it would be good if you could catch it when its a little damp (not muddy). The new pattern and the larger coil should give you a different enough approach to maybe getting some silver out of the field.

Dig any Zinc signals that has a broken response that's a high tone break (not scratchy) these are likely to be a Zinc pocket spill or a zinc very near another high tone coin and the F70 is trying to read both targets. Based on the Wheat penny's depth I'm going to say that the silver should be around the same depth, or to say 4"to 6"

Next!
Are you finding any beaver tail pull tabs (Pull & Toss) if so what is the average depth of them? The reason I ask is the first year these tabs were put into production was 1965 they continued production of that tab until 1975. If the area has these then on average the silver will be at the lower level of the deepest pull & toss tab range.
No your not looking for the tabs, but its really good to dig some to help get an idea of the depth range you have to go to find the silver, they also help to date the area. The square tabs (sta-tabs) replaced the pull & toss sometime towards the end of 1975 (or to say 1976 to date).

Thanks for all the advice and info,, was up there yesterday, 1 hr------and this evening 1 1/2 hrs-------yesterday a picked up 1Q worked a area maybe 25ft sq ---------today when and worked a area by the old baseball field, I was running----------- AT- sp--SL dis 50 thres -3 ---There were areas that it was crazy chatter -------and areas that it was bearable --------Only dug 5 holes ,no coins 2 beaver tails and 3 nice chunks of Alum.I will pick up a 11'' DD ---------------------after1---------------

Ran my E-trac over a yard with the 8x6 sef. Then ran my F75LTD2 with the 5 inch stock coil and found a Barber 1900 at 6 inches solid 75 signal. The F75LTD2 does not get enough credit. Also pulled a Buff 1920 that already had a E-trac go over.

Let me start by saying I'm not a silver hunter, so take this with that in mind...I have a 70 with the 11"dd..and noticed a few things that may help you...especially in an oldish park that may be hiding silver....

I'd hunt that place early in the morning on a damp overcast day, set up as high a sens as possible, around here for me, its about 80, but it seems 70ish gives me a stable and powerful setting.. a 4disc, and adjust the thresh just as slightly neg if needed, no more than -3...might even push the HZ button a time or two to find a stable and accurate setting so theres no falsing at the end of the swing...no notch, I'd be in DP tones...Im sure 3 or 4 would work as well if you prefer, my only experience is with DP however...

Then I'd figure out what coil speed works depending on the trash...if its sort of cleanish, a guy can really whip it...just a bit slower if theres multiple targets pinging off per swing, but not much slower...just a bit....seems theres a proper coil speed for this machine that 'lights up' deeper targets, where they are invisible to a slower coil speed...you will get a sweet deep 'ping' with a fast swing, then try to locate it with a slower sweep and it is gone! swing back over it fast, and there it is again! So a guy keeps whipping that coil over the target and keeping his eyes on the ground to try to get an idea where it is while turning 90 degrees...

It is interesting to read your posts...the huge differences in the designed processors between an Etrac and a 70 made this a good topic....the E you have to go slow, the 70 you sort of have to go a bit faster for it to light up those deeper silvers..you can try it out in the yard...drop a modern clad dime on the deck and see how fast you can fly that coil and how high before you lose the ping...then try it slower...you will find the perfect speed for the ultimate depth...like I said, I dont hunt deep old silver, but I've pulled some real deep coins (10"+) in damp chip totlots and on the beach running a moderate sens and completely stable settings, so I know it can be done...in summation: overcast damp day, nice stable settings and the right coil speed for trying to get as deep as possible..
Mud.

I agree with Mud. I have been detecting about 8 months now and have found 26 silver coins. My settings are basically what Mud stated above with the exception of I use 3H tones. I too have found that damp ground seems to be more productive. My swing speed is extremely fast, if you were to watch from a distance it might appear as though i was in a nest of snakes with a weed eater. When I hit that solid high pitch ping, I shorten my swing, turn 90 degrees with a short swing, then dig.

Although its not exactly linear, you can think of your F70 sens settings in 'inch increments'..example: sens of 40=4" accurate target ID...then theres the soil moisture content, lack of solar flares EMI and ambient interferance, etc. So I run a very stable mid 50's sens for most of my work since I'm hunting clad and jewelry and need something tight and accurate...If the grass is deep, I'll jack it up a bit..

One thing to consider is the modulated audio, its 'strength' will tell you the depth of the target audibly...a guy can overpower a site with this F rig by running it too hot...I believe thats why most folks dont like the DD on account of bottlecaps...running softer, they are zero problem and easy to identify...it really depends on the site and what you think you can expect based upon what you discover in a very short time...so if you set up according to the site, you are working it right....theres seldom anything said about alternative coil manipulation techniques to ID a target, hopping coil, not following conventional swing patterns, high flying, short scrubbing etc..a multidenom tight spill will sound like trash...a guy has to be able to accurately 'hear' the target size signature and depth...The F70 does this, but not if its run too hot...

A guy should fling over a park in short order to figure out what its saying to you based upon age, depth and composition of the trash in the soil...and then adjust accordingly...start out with a good baseline of comfortable settings so you can quickly figure the place out, and adjust as needed...
Mud

I was reading this topic and remembered a guy that used a garette 2500, i believe it had an ajustment for swing speed. Also left me thinking, if you guys are missing coins with e tracs and f 70s and 75s what am i missing with my bounty hunter platinum and land ranger pro? These will both air test a quarter at 10". I realize in the ground is differnt , but i will be checking my swing speed from now on. If i ever get out to detect :)

At this playground I have tried verious settings, ovously not the one to find the silver or wheats, (my thinking that they are there) I wrote down the settings that Mud posted and was ready to leave, we had a 10 min down pour,a big gaint very dark cloud moving in from the west, the cloud was moving pretty fast so I went up to the park,2 miles from home. Pulled in the parking lot ,set up the detector ---used program 2----- I looked at sky and it was all gray,---------(my forecasting ability I thought I have a good 20mins)-------while walking to the gate the wind kicked up,trees bent at 20-30 degree angle, thunder, lighting, and the sky let loose, came home----The postive about tonight is my detector is set for tomorrow---------after1
