I have seen what you are referring to and I think that the sweep of the coil over the target may not be 100% over the target at the first sweep and thus the 'iffy' response until a second and third sweep is made to confirm the target. Maybe its also the direction the coil went over the target the very first time. Perhaps it was the speed of the swing too.
I tend to think though, from my own experience, that the detector, no matter what brand or model, if the sens is set very high (too high) it will tend to false on occasion, giving the illusion something good may be down there.
When using the F70, or any other for that matter, consider trying this.....
Find a deeper than usual target at the settings you normally use. Then, before digging it up or disturbing the ground, lower yous sens to the point where you no longer hear the target. You may be surprised how low you CAN go and how much smoother your detector will perform too. Once you know you can run at low sens and STILL have great depth you gain confidence in the unit and will enjoy using it a whole lot more.
On my F70, mentally I would like to see at least a Sens setting of 50-60 however, I end up running mine around 10, sometime less and still get great depth into the double digits.
