F70 broke?

RTG

New member
I have seen this problem arise many times in the forums but never with my F70 until I tried a 5"dd. It seemed to work just fine for a few days but then it started happening. The dreaded incessant "chattering" as if from electrical interference. So I swapped back to my 11" coil and it will do the same thing. I've reset it, turned the threshold waaaay down (-:geek:, and the sensitivity(and frequency of course). I can be going along and it will start up just all of the sudden, then stop just as quickly and work fine for awhile. I'll do the factory reset and sometimes it will fix it and sometimes it will just start right back up again anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes later. I do notice it near power lines sometimes, where they have never causes any problems before, but it will do the same thing while out in the middle of nowhere. No electrical anything anywhere near.
I tried changing batteries. The ones I had in there were the high dollar lithiums which have lasted forever it seems (well over 40 hours). They still showed to have 1.5 volts! I tried brand new non-lithium energizers and no change. I've even tried coiling the wire differently.

What am I missing?

Send it back to Fisher, 2 coils doing the same thing? sounds like the unit. Had a similar problem almost the same, couldn't use my 75 totally erratic, swapped the 11" and put on the 5" and no more problems and Fisher replaced the 11" coil no problems anymore, but you tried 2 different coils and still the same send it to Fisher..

I have experienced what you are talking about as well, not often, very sporatic...I do carry a cell phone in my shirt pocket. The last time this happened to me was right before a big thunderstorm, and the machine was fine the next day. I figured Fisher built in a "safety feature" to keep us out of the rain, or that the wife had special ordered the "remote shut off" feature, to get me home for dinner!

Here's a new one for you. Yesterday I was detecting with my trusty old F5 in a spot where I go to a lot. Samthing happened to me. I checked the connector, reset gain, threshold, gb something on an off static.. Well got back in my car and headed for home. While I was driving home I was listening to the radio and the weather report came on and guess what the report was that thunder storms were movingn in to the area with lighting. (COULD THIS BE THE PROBLEM?????). Went back after they passed, No static anymore. It was very hot and dry out and the static was coming from the lighting that was 20 miles away. One never knows, Also the static in my car radio should have been my first clue.

Well you bring up a good point with the static. I'm in west Texas, very hot, dry and WINDY lately. It does seem to be worst in the wind. I had heard about rubbing the coil with those static sheets you put in a clothes dryer. Tried that and it just seemed give my coil that nice fresh scent.... I do have a cell phone i keep in my pocket, I'll try without it. I'll do some more testing, then see about hollering at Fisher. Thanks for the input!

May not be "applicable" but I used to HEAR lightning in my headphones years ago with my White's 6000 then the XLT! Just like the static on the radio before a storm. It would scare the S#!^ outta me knowing I was holding a METAL electronic device with lightning near by! I saw it as God calling me an idiot & telling me to head for shelter!
Seriously, sounds like a call to Fisher is in order. Good Luck! Let us know what the problem/resolution was!
