Nope...if your site conditions let you run it wide open, by all means go ahead.

If it's really a trashy area, and your ears start to bleed, then turn it down a bit.

Certainly will equate to more depth but may miss a good target due to EMI...Whatever works is my motto but do expect distracting noise...Many run their units a little high
with minor instability and guess its all an individual decision...Your call and feel you must have mild ground reading your post....

run it as hot as it will go, then back it off a hair when it becomes unstable. nail those deep targets!

Mike, others,

I believe you have warned about "burying" the gain knob, havent you? I recall reading somewhere that you should only turn the Gain up until the number reads "99" then stop. If you turn the knob all the way up unitl it cant go further, you lose performance (depth?).

hi all ,new to the hobby, just bought an F5 and loving it, just one problem, was out today and lost the pinpoint function, detector seems to be working fine but cant pinpoint, anyone got any ideas??? regards

Not a cure for the p/p problem, just a way around it. Just X the target and dig, I rarely use the p/p unless I want additional target info.

col123, I have a little trouble with my pin pointing function, too. I just bought my F5 earlier in the year, and it only has about 60 hours on it. When I use it, I really have to keep my finder down on it hard, and sometimes it cuts out. Other times I have to hold the coil up about the ground about a foot, hit the PP button, and then lower the coil to the ground. It works - yes, is it a pain in the butt sometimes, oh yeah! Just remember, you have a warranty on it, so send it in to get it fixed if it really is messed up. I only use mine to check depth, never for actually pinpointing. As Sqwaby states, use the X'ing method for pinpointing. Different coils will PP differently, so drop a target on the ground, check to see how the coil that you are using is going to PP, and then go!

good luck!

That's interesting! I'll have to pay attention to this the next time I'm out and start having issues. The school that I hunt has a geothermal system that was recently put in, is that something that might cause problems with EMI???

Thanks,
Ponhy

Hey stilpony,

I went out today and scored one 1926D wheat cent a clad pocket spill (1-qtr., 2 dimes, 2 nickels and 2-zincs) and more pull tabs than one man has a right to, at least thats my opinion.

I stayed away from the EMI site mentioned in my above post and predictably my trusty F-5 worked admirably.

As much as I would like to dazzle you with my brilliance. I can't possibly answer your question. But all is not lost.:clapping: Here is a link that will help explain the in's and outs of EMI better than I ever could.

Be sure and take note of the link provided by "Sandman"

Take care, knarfJ

I think I just figured out my problem, knarfJ, I think it is dirty coil covers! I just thought about this, I was at the beach a while back and was swinging my F5 NEAR the water, not in it, but I'm sure the coil filled up with sand. I did on occasion rinse it off in the water, so I'm sure it is full of stuff, so I'll clean that tonight and head out to my EMI issure area and see how it works. I'll try turning off my cell phone, too, the one that I carry in my bag while hunting. The cell phone I knew about, but never even considered the coil "contents". I was at the beach one other day, and did clean the coil cover out, and it was filled with sand, so I'm sure this is probably what is causing the issue.

Thanks for the great info, and that link on the Fisher's and EMI!
