F5 poor screen quality:surprised:

Hi All

I have just bought a new Fisher F5 and have just been horrified at the quality of the plastic screen cover, if you accidentally touch the screen you end up with black marks all over the LCD screen, never seen this before on a detector, if this had been mentioned in other posts i would not have bought one, i cant imagine how long this screen will last, this is my own constructive criticism.

on mine I cut a piece out of a clear plastic folder like found in school supply section to fit over original lens, adhered it with silicone for easy replacement.this way throw away lens gets scratched and not original.trust me this is the only weakness this detector has.if ya look right above knobs ya will see line of throw away lens-black spots on edges is the silicone.ya bought a high quality machine-learn it and you'll have many successful hunts

I did the same but bought thin lexan at homedepot for about 3 bucks. I attached with small strips of velcro.

Take care

Bob

I haven't had any issues with mine and I don't have a cover on it either
But.....I baby my machines and clean the faceplates just like I clean my telescope mirrors, very gently with wet cotton balls as I hate scratches on my screens.

Various folks have made various protectors for their faceplates, mostly just to protect from scratches. I have used something called "Fellows WriteRight" Universal Screen Protectors on my Fisher, Whites and Minelabs units in the past that worked well. I never got around to putting one on my F5, yet. Probably should at some point.

Maybe you have a unit that isn't quite right? A picture might help us say "yep, thats normal", or "Nope, somethings wrong"

Actually it's been mentioned a lot in previous posts by myself and several others, maybe you didn't look back far enough. I did the same thing as woodwizard and after a lot of hunting hours I just replaced my first plastic piece with my second piece.

I never had any problems with black marks, I just noticed I got a couple scratches after about 10 hours hunting and figured if I wanted to read the screen at 100 hours I'd better do something to protect it. It is a flimsy screen!

All the new Fishers are this way and your right, it SUCKS. Their easily scratched, and dimpled. Not sure why they used such a cheap screen cover :ranting: The old Fisher screens were definitely a lot more robust.

I was thinking about getting some larger sized PDA screen covers and cut them to size for my Fishers.

My F5 had no screen problems send it back.

I did the same as wood wizard! I took a clear piece of plastic that I had cut out of a plastic container that my daughters Barbie doll came in and cut it to fit the F5 screen and used clear two sided sticky tape to help hold it. Been using it for a year with no problems. Just wipe the dust and dirt off with a damp paper towel.

I bought a huge piece of vinyl at a fabric shop for about three bucks. I used a piece of paper for a pattern, trimmed the vinyl, used a couple of drops of water to moisten it and pressed it on to the detector. It lasted all of last year without any problems. Now I can use my first screen cover for a pattern and redo it for next year.
Just a good thing to do to prevent scratches and problems. Mine was on an F70 and I also thought the vinyl helped prevent the buttons that you pushed every time you hunted.l

I don't use any kind of screen cover either and with all the hours I have on mt F 75, I still don't have the first scratch or blemish. They are, though, flimsy feeling, for sure. HH jim tn

Hi All

The problem was not scratches on the screen, but the LCD screen under the clear screen, if anything touched the clear screen i got a black line on the LCD screen, just like the old etcha scetch, if you know what i mean. Fisher has asked for my serial number to see if there is an update for this problem.

Thanks for all the advice, have put a piece of plastic over screen and took the F5 for its first field test today. I have to say it performs fantastically, has a great depth and good recognition of objects. the bed news is the items today turned out to be old plough and slag, better luck next time.:detecting:
