F5 at the beach

Had my F5 about three weeks and had a chance to try it on the Beach. Did OK in the dry sand as well as wet sand, a little noise in the water as the tides came over the coil but not that bad. Had better luck hitting the pennies at a nearby chip filled tot-lot. What's up with all the paper clips on the beach, some big secret I don't know about. I had many more than shown in the photo.

My guess, having been a kid when dinosaurs roamed the earth, used as ballast to weight the tails on kites. One would add a number of them depending on wind speed that day, and of course positioning along the tail affected control & performance. Who knew we were unpaid junior aeronautical load specialists!

Good report Airdon, keep 'em coming :detecting:

When you hit the wet salt water, any problems ground balancing the unit to salt as it's advertised to be able to handle ?

I was debating between the F70 and the F5, and decided to give the F5 a shot. It should be here Thursday, then I'm heading up to a lake resort area to give it a try.

In the water the GB was 0. On the wet sand, the GB was around a 2 or 3. Up high on the beach in dry sand the GB, if I can remember right was around the mid fifties. I did notice on the areas where the high tides have reached, some "black sand streaks", the unit would make some chatter swinging one direction but quiet in the other direction. Turning down both gain and a negative threshold would eliminate the chatter. Also in the all metal mode, I would get many low tone/iron hits that would not register on the TID, switching to disc but without limiting any iron would silence the detector over those spots. I dug many of these targets and would always be rewarded with a rusty 3/4" size or smaller piece of flat iron. HH.
