F5 acting crazy

While hunting in the sand at the beach yesterday, I noticed in 2 different spots, my detector started going nuts, display flashed erratically, entire readout blanking on and off etc. also very odd choppy low pitch / weird tone combo. It is almost like it couldn't identify the target so it threw a tantrum. What type of metal or object would cause this. As soon as I moved away, everything worked fine. I wish now that I would have dug it, but I dug so many holes yesterday, I just decided to move on.

OHHH!!, your so lucky you didn't dig.

:help:

You didn't know the F series have a sand shark Alert built into them?

But the signal is very interesting-Hope you get it figured out-----IB

It's called an "overload alarm". You can get it on a shallow can (5-6""), a hidden manhole cover at 2 feet, or anything large. Next time raise the coil. The target ID is useless as well as the depth meter on large objects (which are set up for coin sized objects). It doesn't hurt the detector.

Hey that sounds logical. On the 70 the overload sounds like that siren sound on the Mrs. Pac-man game-good call--IB

I believe you called it right, Hightone. That is what it sounds like to me, too.

Depending on where you are at, you may want to recover those overloads. I've found some nice pocket knives because of the overloads. You never know.

Yeah, take a few scoops on any big overloads...they are generally buried beer cans, but also knives and even a shallow big wrist bangle can cause it...I take a few scoops just to be certain, looking for a handgun..in my area that would not be out of the question either...I can always use a nice fresh drop handgun, and that is what comes to mind on an out of place overload signal at specific areas of the beach I hunt..

Yeah, the F5 doesn't have that siren sound. It reminds me of the "tilt" action display and sound on the old pinbball machines.
