F4 Experience Update

Been using my DD coil for about a week now. I LIKE IT! It takes a bit of adjusting getting used to where the signal is. For me it's just a matter of coming up to the signal and the target is about an 1-1/2 from toe. The signal registers all the way back to the heel about 10" back so that can be a bit tricky. But after a week I am pretty confident. My plugs are only about 3"X3" and 90% of the time I'm right.

I rehunted the spot where my first (and only) silver coin cam from and only picked up a bit of trash and a few newer pennies. The place has bushes and the DD doesn't like that. Better would be my 4" coil.

On the beach I am FLYING! Signals are very steady and I run with NO disc. One bad point and I'm not sure why..but it register beer caps as quarters 83 to 88. The 8" coil registers them as 22 to 25. This is for new or rusty with the DD. With the 8" rusty caps can come in from 72 to 88. Second bad point is that the beaches are getting empty...so on to my research..Missions?...stage stops?....torn down homes?

Two more silver rings to my name. One with the DD coil and the other with the 8". For some reason I am also building up a large collection of keys. They come in at 60 to 90. And my sinker collection weighs in at about 5 pounds now <smile>.

I am still getting my phantom signals but now they stand out as such very easily and I can ignore them. They have a faster slightly higher pitch almost like a loud whisper. When I haven't had a signal for a minute or so it does make me jump..but I generally can ignore it. My confidence level with the F4 is up to close to 85%. My BH 3300 (confidence level 99%) is sitting in the garage now and I've resisted taking it out, so far. I am thinking of putting the 4" coil on it and using it as a back up.

I'm planning a prospecting trip into the San Gabriels. It's a place with a lot of old mines and a lot of recreational miners. I have some "special" plans and expect to be successful. A matter of technique and "location, location, location".

of the F4 and the 3300, now that you have some time under your belt with the F4. depth about the same or?..... target i.d. accuracy.... any info appreciated. still would like to try the f4, and maybe soon i'll get to. i got a coinstrike now that i am trying to get a handle on. but i miss the 3300 i sold a couple of months ago. trying to figure out some way to get one back while keeping peace at home........ you know, the one who must be listened to and obeyed. have a good one Joe.

Hi Tim,

I'd like to do a side by side comparison and try the different coils. This will help me in my hunting too. Maybe this weekend.

I know the BH 3300 is pretty deep but my hunting generally doesn't take advantage of that I'm rarely deeper than 5" or 6".

A nice hunt in a potentially mid 1800's spot.

With the DD coil had a lot of trouble with steel beer tops!! And I mean a LOT! They come in at quarter/silver VIDS and it was driving me crazy. This particular spot has the beer drinkers flipping their caps all around. The only comfortable readings were dime/copper pennies at about 70 to 78.

I tried the bushes and did a lot better .. nothing fantastic but a nice wheat: 1936 s. THIS is my oldest coin...so far. I think, and I'm not really positive, that I started being able to recognize the beer tops. It seems they come in at a slightly higher pitch (tiny bit higher) than a real quarter/silver which has a more solid sound. As I say..not positive but it seems to be true.

I came out of this hunt with only 3 clad dimes and that one wheat and a handful of copper pennies..BUT sizing up the location for future hunts was the most important. There is potential there just need to get out to fringes where less people are today.

I don't like the DD's picking up beer tops at VIDS of 88 (discerning ear or not). I will try the coil on the BH 3300 and see how it responds. It never steered me wrong on quarters. An 83 to 88 was either a quarter or quarter sized copper/silver.

More to follow.
