F4 and F5 owners, please!

Hi, I dont have a Fisher's detector, and have never yet had one. I would like to get an F75 (definitely cant afford) or an F 70 (dont think I can afford), but circumstances may dictate that I start my Fisher's experience with a lesser model. Am thinking in terms of F5 or F4. Have read good things about the F5 and have watched Bill Ladd's video, and it seems very good. I've also read good things about the F4 and seen it favourably compared to F5. Would like to hear from F4 andF5 owners and I WANT you to be biased; I want to hear why you think your detector is good, as that will help me decide if it will be good for me. Thank you in advance. (Am also considering an X Terra 505, but would like to try an F series detector if I think it will be better). Sapper.

Furious T,
I purchased the F-5 for my first detector. I was first thinking of buying a X Terra, but a friend of mine who has been using Fisher for many years talked me into buying Fisher. One of the things that crossed my mind when shopping was that I was not sure if I wanted to buy a starter or top of the line. After reading the many posts here, I decided to go with the F-5. There are some posts here on the F-5s gain/threshold settings that really helped a newbie like me out. I have had mine since Christmas time and I am at the point now where I am using AM mode more and more. I have no experience with the F-4, but if you could afford the F-5, Why not go with it. I have found two silver coins and one silver ring since I purchased it.

Good Luck and HH

What kind of hunting are you going to do? What kind of ground do you have?

I really like the F5 and I have the F75. It is fast and has the lower freq. I think the new 11 DD coil will make it a whole new machine. It has good depth does well in iron and trash. I have not had the F4 but I would think the F5 is the little brother to the F70/F75. It would be a good place to start. I have hunted for many years and found a lot of cool old coins and relics and glass. I would start out with the F5 and wait and see what fisher comes out with in the future and start saving for that. If you have the bug for hunting nothing will stop you from getting better. It takes time to understand what you detector is telling you. So learn what you have no detector will do it all but you get clues from the machine and it is up to you to dig or not to dig.

I agree 100 per cent on the F5 -its the best machine to come along in its price range for quite sometime.I've been detecting lots of yrs. before settling on this machine I looked at several different models.forget the others this is a very powerful, fast and has the depth of lot higher priced machines.have used mine on both wet/dry sand, gone water hunting and it does quite well in this iron ore infested ground here in east Tx.have hit coins up to 8''-10'Just go buy the F5 and don't look back.take the time to learn what its telling you,get a pair of md headphones and start hunting-good luck-also by using this machine you'll have to change your name because you'll no longer be furious

As I've said many times on these forums - if you're on a budget and your mind is made up for a Fisher machine - the F4 is the most underrated detector in the lineup. You can easily pick one up for $250 if you shop around.

Thanks guys, great info.....I have been detecting for a while, so I've been able to understand all that you've been saying. Great feedback and I appreciate it. Hey Woodwizard! I try not to be furious all the time. I use that name here because my daughter assisted me in becoming a member on the forums. She asked me what name I wanted to use, and while I was thinking about it , she typed in "Furious T", which is the name of one of our pets. I dont have the skills (or the heart) to change it (yet). Again, thanks for your answers guys, because I haven't got a Fisher detector (yet), I cant really relate any detector I have to them, so every little bit helps. Sapper.

It's a tough call. While I feel overall the F5 is a better machine then the F4, I think the F4 offers a LOT more bang for the buck.

Let's look at the facts:

F5 price with single 10" Elliptical Search coil $500
F5 11" DD coil $159
F5 5" DD coil $159
Total for F5 with three coils ~ $800

F4 price with 4" nugget shooter coil, 8" concentric coil and 11" DD coil (same as the F75 coil, but tuned for the F4 frequency) $425.
Total for F4 with three coils ~ $425

Depends on what you want to do with the detector, the F4 will certainly be easier to learn, but for the most part it's not going to go as deep as the F5 depending on soil, settings, full moon, etc. The F4 tends to max out around 6-7", BUT there's plenty of good stuff to be found within that range. The 11" DD coil on the F4 is a killer coil, it's too bad the F5 didn't come with that coil stock, they would've had a huge demand for it IMHO if it did.

Brian

I ordered my F5 from surfscannersdetector. Call mrbill there he's the only person I order any md stuff from.Oh yea -don't order the 5" coil from that place in Fl it's for F75 there this a post here someplace about it-the one for the F5 hasn't been released yet

Thanks Brian, great info. I'm in Australia, so I'm not sure if we get the same deal on coils with the F4, but the other info. is great. Ditto Woodwizard. Thanks again. I guess I'll just have to see what the local Fisher distributor can do for me here. I appreciate the info. very much, and although it may not seem to you that you are telling me a lot, every little bit of information helps me to put a picture together that will suit my needs. Thanks again. Sapper.

2 things the F5 has the F4 doesn't. Ground balance in disc and AM and the F4 doesn't ID in AM. Ground balance on the F4 only works in pinpoint and AM.
From what I have heard of Australia you need ground balance in all modes.

If you are just coinshooting in not so severe ground I can attest to the F4's coin magnet coil as can Cal-Cobra. The F4 is a good detector for that.

A question I forgot to ask....I recall reading somewhere (one of the posts) of the possibility of using Bounty Hunter coils on the F4 or F5....is this right (or wrong)? Thanks. Sapper.

WRONG-different plugs BH has 4pins F5 has 5 pins also was told by a very reliable source not to do that.just have to do like everybody else all wait for the release of the real one-they did release an 11" coil-review and test by mike hollis so you know that infos correct

The F4 uses the same coils as the newer Bounty Hunters. I picked up the 10" concentric from Amazon for $30, and it's a killer coil, pinpoints spot on every time, feather light, and solves the bottle cap issue common on DD coils.

It may be that the F5 just has better coils then the F4 and that is why the price is more. Coils very on a lot of machines and you have to start out with a really good tuned coil or the machine really doesn't mean that much. I would go with the F5 but in your neck of the woods you are not from the USA you may want to look into a whole other machine
