F-75 Snags a "Big Un"

A friend and I went hunting one day last week to an area that literally 100's of people had pounded..... we both did real well, I had found a number of .69 drops, a large piece of 8" scrapnel, case shot, round balls, pistol balls, etc and as I start to walk to the van, he calls on the phone....seems like he had hit an iron-infested area and the Fisher was able to ferret-out a good target despite iron everywhere. He dug down 12 or so inches and stuck the end of the coil in the hole and the Fisher gave an overload signal. At about 30 inches, he calls me... he needs help getting to the cannonball and getting it out.... (It is dark by now and neither of us had a light but luckily the moon is shining bright) When I got there, I was able to finally get my shovel along side of the cannonball and finally under it..Once I get it it up far enough, Dave can reach in the hole and pull it out...... It's an 8" , 50 pound roundball, fired from a Naval gun..... wooden fuse is still in place. I took my jacket off and wrapped it around the ball and each one of us grabbed a sleeve, finally made out but wore us both out.... I continue to be amazed with the F-75 and it's ability to find targets that have been missed. On this hunt, I attribute what I found to the fact that in areas where there wasn't a lot of iron, I hunted in all-metal. I'll get some pictures up later in the week....best to all, RichardnTn

That sounds like a big un - especially if you need a jacket stretcher and aid rescue crew - looking forward to: pics - WTG

Even a cannon ball at 30" is impressive. Richard, I, too, continue to be amazed at what the F75 will do in trash. Neat find! HH jim tn

Make sure you keep it immersed in water. Those wooden watercap fuses will shrink down to about 1/2 size when it dries. Contact thatcannonballguy, Pete George, about preserving it [Dave at Dixie Detector's has his add. if I got it wrong]. I suspect that with the weight you give it may be a CASE-SHOT, because a shell with just powder would be lighter.:fisher:
