F-75 & small coil

tab-nabit

Well-known member
I added the F-75 to my collection at about the beginning of winter, so I haven't really used it but a few times. I'm still stuck on using a few other machines. So I gave the F-75 & small coil a little time today. I usually hunt by audio using headphones and don't rely on the TID display.
I wanted to give the F-75 a chance today, but the audio was something I'm not used to. And yes I only have swung the F-75 a few times, so I know like any other machine, time needs to spent on learning a machine.
I started out in all metal static, then went to motion. After awhile I needed to give my ears a break so I switched to discriminate and set it at 26.
I ran in DE with 2F and played with the notch settings on and off, sens at different points but mostly ran at 65.
Like I have said, I normally hunt by audio but I wanted to give the TID on the F-75 a fair shake. I found today to many times that when it indicated a nickel and most of these were repeatedly with the confidence bars up, the target usually, well in almost all cases turned out to be a square tab.
Most other machines I'm used to, the nickel and a square tab have a bit of a gap between conductivity, so usually a nickel hit does not always turn out to be a square tab. Is this normal for the F-75? Or did I not get something right.
I don't want all my nickel readings turn out to be square tabs all the time, and I know I need get out more with the F-75, but this was a bit discouraging for me.
And the audio is something that might take me a good while to get used to so I may have to play around with more settings and hope I find a point that i can work with. I have got so used the language of a single tone Tesoro machines so change will take time getting used to. I also use my Explorer-2 here and there the the tones it produced I used to in only a few hunts.
I'm not giving up on the F-75 yet as there are tons of fine points to like, but it only takes a few dislikes on a machine and they soon start collecting dust in the spare room. I need a little encouragement to prevent the F-75 from becoming a dust collector. It's really to much in cost just to try it a few times, so I hope I can get to where I can use it on a more regular basis.

DON'T GIVE UP! To start, I strongly suggest hunting several hours just in the factory preset modes. This setup is not quite as hot and is a little easier to get used to what all the F75 is telling you is under the coil. I also started out just hunting some tot lots (woodchips) where there was less trash to deal with. Were you using notch when you were digging square pull tabs as nickel readings? If so, maybe your notching was off some. Personally, I never use notch and have dug literally hundreds of nickels. This is not to imply that I don't dig some tabs, but I have found that most tabs give bouncy readings and also seem to omit a click at the end of the tone. On my machine and in my ground, I dig all 28-31 readings and the vast majority will be nickels. A 30 lock reading is a nickel 99.9% of the time. The other .1% were 4 gold rings. Again, Tab, don't give up on the F75. It truly is an amazing detector and in a short time I would bet your other detectors will be one ones collecting dust. Good luck and HH jim tn

The small coil is just amazing at getting good depth and pin pointing..I love it..

Keep an eye on the VDI numbers and forget the bars. They have too great a range - as in 10 units at the Nickle spot. Nickels hereabouts almost always hit st 30 or 31 on my F-75. Deeper older will go even lower (28/29). Pulltabs I run across are 34 and up.
