F-75 on SMALL GOLD/LEAD/BB

HumblePie

New member
Hello All,

One final question on the ability of the F-75 to pick-up on small targets. Can anyone say how well it would do in the all metal motion mode and/or the PF discriminate mode picking-up say, a typical half to one gram size gold nugget in the ground. In the absence of gold, could someone maybe do a check with a bit of lead, or even a copper BB would do in a pinch. Many thanks, Jim.
PS: Pls include your ground balance setting for the soil.

Jim:

Interesting that you should ask as I picked up a small disk of lead approx. 1/4" dia and 1/16" thick at around 5" or " on the local lake beach today. Although I don't remember the VDI, the target was loud and in the nickel/tab region. The GB was 89 and the fe3o4 was .3 indicating lots of mineralization in the sand or in the gravel beginning at approx. 8" depth. Settings were Disc. 0, Sens. 60, JE, 4H using the large DD coil. At the time it was around 40 deg with the wind howling at 25 to 35 mph. I didn't stay too long and the quality on the target tone encouraged me to dig the target, as I was mostly looking for jewelery and on my way back to my truck. Actually I have picked up much smaller metal targets with the F-75. So small, in fact, that even when I had the target pinpointed I had to pick up small handfuls of soil to pass in front of the probe to find it. I remember one that was approx. 1/8" by 1/8". I'm thinking the F-75 might work OK on small gold nuggets.

Hi,

I was going nugget shooting and it was costing me a bunch and there was no news on the F-75 and gold. Not wanting to get skunked on an untried machine, I bought a well respected XT-70 with the small coil to help insure I didn't get skunked. I didn't. The gold I found would have looked great in a gold pan, but it was so small I was amazed the XT-70 found it. After two days using the XT-70 with the small coil, I was itching to get out my F-75 with the 11" coil so I could cover more ground. But first, I took the gold I found with the XT-70 and did an air test on a tiny piece with the F-75. The F-75 picked it right up in JE mode maxed out and I used the F-75 my last day and doubled my gold take. I was very pleased and once again my XT-70 will take the back seat. The XT-70 is a fine machine, but I really do like my F-75.

Guys I have to agree I think the F75 sees objects within 1MM or so Its an amazeing machine..I just picked up a small peice
of Iron steel wire the size of a hair strand 2" long or so 7" deep in .3 soil JE mode..the unit went to hunting loud..its not gold But
it is tiny..And I see the F75 as a great nugget hunter..
Thanks idaho-mark..I have been wondering how the F75 stacked up to the Xtera 70 hunting gold as the 70 get rave reviews..
Humblepie from all your compiled info whats your take on the F75 you gonna get one..with your knowledge you will love it..

Well James, it's a close thing. First though, a big thankyou to everyone who has responded so far. I only recently discovered this forum as you can probably tell, but it's for me. Everyone is enthusiastic, and very helpful. It's as if everyone's on the same wavelength, and now I'm "tuned-in" too.

The decision on which detector to purchase is not easy. I've seen the reviews from both Britain, and Europe that indicate the F-75 is at the top of the heap for depth, ergonomics, weight/balance, iron discrimination ability, and an unequalled recovery rate. Plus with the All-Metal motion mode at this operating frequency (around what..13 kHz and a bit?), and full discrimination, with visual ID in all metal and high sensitivity, it's easy to imagine this unit would do just fine for gold prospecting as well as general purposes. At Gary's Detecting in Britain, he describes it as an MXT on steroids...that is to say, it has the MXT benefits, plus it's deeper, lighter, and faster responding. It's interesting to note that despite some criticism over test results published from both locals (albeit in disturbed soil conditions), the results uniformly suggest the F-75 gets top marks. (The results are also uniform for other models, despite how they performed). In Canada/USA it's not so easy to get solid, substantiated information. The F-75 doesn't seem to get much notice from the nugget hunting fraternity, there's very little information and I wonder why; a few that I've discussed it with, are not keen on it for prospecting, but I can't pin them down on why not. That's why I ask questions about it's capabilities...and this post asks about its small target abilities for good reason.

The MXT/X-Terra 70 come highly recommended, the results/comments are uniformly good, as well, from users over here. I'd like to use a unit that's lightweight, so that sort of let's the MXT out. The XT-70 looks good, but I did notice (again in Britain) that neither unit is rated as highly (but still quite good) as the F-75; in depth tests, the F-75 also did better, but those tests were generally for larger targets, not much by way of grain to gram size targets.

Soooo, I decided to ask the people that use the F-75 (you guys) to make comments on small target ability. If the results seem good, then I think I have all the info I need to make a decision. In these parts, it'll cost about $1175 incl. tax (14%), so I'd like to be certain as reasonably possible before making the plunge (that's a wife rule as well). Also, I'm thinking about a ground balancing PI to compliment the F-75 (or whatever), in addition to upgrading some of my other accessory equipment; as you can see, this could be costly. I can't get my hands on one to try it out properly beforehand...oh I could fiddle with it in some shop down in Toronto, but that wouldn't tell me anything much. Therefore I turn to the best possible source...there can be no substitute for experience. Any information, is better than absolutely nothing. Finally, I'm aware that some dedicated prospecting units will do the job fine (ie. GMT), but if the F-75 will do reasonably well compared with either the MXT/XT-70, then it would be my preference.

Before closing, my sincere thanks to Marke and Ron; you guys provided solid information that I can understand; and in Ron's example, that lead piece might have been found even easier/deeper (no doubt) in all metal. Marke..did you hunt in all-metal mode, or in JE mode? If you guys, or anyone else, can add to this thread, please do so. Many thanks..Jim.

Jim I totally understand these metal detectors aren't cheap..And kudos to you for getting all the info you can before a purchase..I researched for a month and decided on the F75..and love .But it can be a monster if you crank it up in some conditions I learned very quick with this unit A little is alot..I think Dave johnson and the gang Built alot of possibilitys and options in the F75..But I am no pro still learning something new with every hunt and read in all the forums..so you live in canada..I have some friends I talk to up in kitchner about nitro rc stuff..good guys..If I am not mistaking didn't dave johnson help design the mxt...and several other great units..there was a Bunch of engineers behind the F75 according to the write up.I know I have Big plans for the F75..I need to send it in for the Upgrade weather proofing..And want to do some gold shooting and I have the 4 old home sites to hunt..I just work almost 24/7..so time is limited
and with me just getting my dad and my 11 year old daughter a new machine I hope to start family hunting soon..james

I pick up 2 hearing aid batterys,Today. They were at the 5" to 6"range.Loud and clear. sens at 80.....

Casper... thanks for that piece of information...a nice confirmation, and very much appreciated..thanks..Jim.

James...Dave Johnson has been involved with designing many detectors for several manufacturers over the last two decades, including in chronological order, the Lobo Supertrac, MXT, T2, and F-75. These units represent a new breed of single frequency VLF detectors with respect to their ability to see good targets in close proximity to iron debris. The F-75 represents the ultimate in super fast response, as well as being a deepseeking, powerful unit. The F-75 has some attractive features as a gold unit, but is it sensitive enough to small grain to gram size targets? Let's see if others will post their observations here.
Yep, I live about 30 minutes north of Toronto, in the countryside, and about four hours south of gold/silver country up on the precambrium shield. It's good being near to such beautiful country, dotted with countless thousands of kettle lakes and rushing streams, tall forests, abundant wildlife, and rich in gold, silver, copper, and many other minerals. You might keep that in mind if you ever contemplate a camping trip up this way. Weather's good usually until November, and then you can get snow up north in that area. I always prospect in October for sunny, but cool (varies between 40 and 75 degrees F, depending on whether a cold front has recently gone through), crisp autumn days...great for digging and big campfires at night!!! Jim.

WOW sounds like a heaven for sure..check this out..reedsgoldmine.com..I live 45 min from the first gold mine rush in the USA and theres been reports back in the day of the gold rush this area was combed severly till the great out west gold rush took affect..theres a place in the NC mtns you can pan dig and keep targets..I dont think they will let Detectors in the place..you more less pay a fee and start digging..I spoke to my uncle and Dad yesterday and we all agreed we need to start shooting the creeks on there propertys..the price of gold is up...I would love to find a nugget big enough to pay for the machine..he he..My wife would be amazed..

Well then James, at the end of a beautiful blue sky day, after investigating those fluttery weak signals that can indicate high grade silver at depth, returning to camp and evaluating the day's silver finds by lantern light, while enjoying a steaming mug of coffee by the fire...well, I guess you could say that my idea of heaven. Nothin' in this world pleases me better, and that's a fact.
Yep, its always a good idea to keep the wife happy. After 35 years of marriage, I know that a large part of my happiness is entirely dependent upon the wife being happy with me. Soooo, for our 35th anniversay, I gave her the best little diamond ring I ever found....errrrrr. Also makes it easier to get new equipment, although I do try to be sensible, and choose wisely. Attached are some photos of silver I've found just to give you an idea about what's out there. I've got a few much larger and many smaller pieces, but these are representative.

I would appreciate any further posts here regarding the F-75's ability to pick-up on grain to gram size targets; confirmation is nice to get. Thanks...Jim.
