F-75 Newbie....Need some pointers for relic hunting

nbforrest1863

I am new to hunting with my F75. Although it's 2yrs old...I know it's a great machine, from what I've heard.

A lot of the different ways to set up the machine confuse me with the F75. I've done the White's and Minelab, now I've settled on this one.

Would any of you CW relic hunters (I'm in middle Tn) please send me the way you set up your machines? I really would appreciate it.

If you don't mind tell me step by step....as in after going thru the list on the left side, when to GB, and when to switch to right side and what to do with that list?

What is fast grabbing...pushing forward or pulling toward you? Also is it true that 20 and up are diggable targets for relic hunting? Does this machine stay with a number consistently after you find a

a target? Or do the numbers jump around? And lastly, when you use a probe, does it make your numbers change on the machine for targets?

Thanks and any and all help is much appreciated!

Tomorrow I will be taking my F-75 and the new video camera back to the place I filmed my first "how to" video. I'm going to do a better video of how I set the F-75 up for relic hunting, and addressing a few of the commonly asked questions/problems I get through emails and at the D.I.V. hunts when I teach the F-75 classes. Look for it coming in the next few days. I promise you'll not want to miss it!!

As for your questions right now. You fastgrab by pushing the trigger forward and holding it there...then pumping the coil up and down a few times. Make sure you're over an area with no metal under the coil....sometimes that's easier said than done.

In decent dirt, the numbers on the ID are fairly accurate. In bad ground they all go out the window.

How to tell if its good dirt or bad dirt? Stay tuned for the video :)

If you dig only 20 and up you may miss some good relics. I went relic hunting yesterday and I dug 10 and up. I use sound more than I use the meter. If the sound is solid swinging the coil over the target from 2 different directions I dig it.
Good luck

Disc Mode

Disc setting of 0 (never higher than 5)
Notch 1
2 tones
Sensitivity as high as you can get it and remain somewhat stable.
Boost Mode if not in too much iron
If a lot of iron, I will go to JE mode

Fast Grab (Ground Balance) every so often in clean ground. But the F75 will perform well in Disc Mode even if you forget to Fast Grab every now and then.

Dig all repeatable signals that give you a higher tone than the iron grunt. It is noisy that way but you will dog relics and you will dig deep relics.
In real heavy iron the little 5" coil is a champ!

just my two cents

This will be a bit of a rambling post because I have bronchitis and the doctor gave me cough syrup with codiene... and I like it... *cough* but i'll do the best I can.

Find a spot and Fastgrab (after swinging 10' check it again), if the ground changes like from softerg ground to a hard rocky slope keep checking it.

Find the quietest channel by pushing or pulling the trigger while holding the red button, some people seem to have a channel that tha certain channel they always use, Daniel TN always uses F7 in his ground and some people claim that some certain channel is always best, I have not noticed that but you cna check it out.

Either leave your cell phone in your vehicle or TURN IT OFF, it WILL cause chatter, especially if you are in the sticks and away from a tower. Your cellphone will constantly try to connect and it will really cause problems. Even if the tower is close it will connect with the it too often.

For your first relic hunt at any place use 2F and set the sensitivity as high as you can without too much chatter, especially if there is EMI or lots of trash like nails and canslaw, set the disc on 6, no notch. Disc higher than 21 or lower than 6 will boost the signal and cause chatter but... you don't need that boost at first. First, you want to get the easier targets and see how much iron and trash there is.

The faster you swing it, the deeper it will go with a good TID. Slower will not give as good of a TID. When you find a target, even if there are several targets together, one good, several bad... swiing the coil completely over and off the target, fast. If you've used a Minelab don't even think about a slow swing or a wiggle to get an good TID... swing it fast and wide. You'll get a bunch of TID numbers but you'll see your target in there. Sometimes a good target that is deep or in bad ground will never give you a solid TID, it will just never lock on. It may jump over a 40 number range but it will hit the correct number from time to time... that's just the way it is and you will have to deal with it.

I'm sure you know about gridding an area once you start finding goodies. Say a 10x10 area, swing it N to S then E to W, then ne to sw then nw to se.. it is worth the trouble with the F75.

Cut square nails are a problem, whole ones will double beep those cut ones may sound iffy but so much good stuff sounds iffy too I end up digging them.

After you have hunted the place well with 2F you can do one of two things... well do them both. Switch to all metal and get a very slight positive ground balance then dig all the targets that jump to 20 or more, some good targets may even be lower in the iron but you'll figure that out. Then use the 5" coil in AM and hit it again with higher sensitivity, maybe both AM and disc=0.

The numbers are a little different in different processes. Take a known target like a shallow quarter or nickel and go through the different processes and see how the numbers differ slightly. That is good to know when you are on an iffy target, you can switch to the different processes and use the different info to help you with ID.

Forget the coil cover, it gets stuff in it too easy and it will crack in at least two places the first time you take it off to clean it, then it will get more stuff in it and the next time you take it off it'll break somewhere else... just forget it...

For coins most people seem to like 4H, if you are at an old place most minnies will hit that med high tone... Personally I usually use 2F or all metal for both relics and coins. All metal has better audio and TID and is, I think, deeper.

I find that using BC and DP really help to ID bottle caps, raising the coil helps too.

One of the biggest things is learning that the F75 sometimes gives a good TID and sometimes the TID jumps all over the place. Remember that the visual and the audio are completely seperate, that is a big help..

You'll probably think that there is something wrong with your machine at first, it takes some time to get used to. The tones are not soothing like some machines, they are almost harsh but you will make good finds with it if you stick with it... it really is an amazing machine. The recovery is faster than the human brain.

You will miss some targets by using 2F because of the iron close to them but onve you've cleaned out all the targets you can find with 2F you can find more by using the small coil... and then even more with all metal, digging those that jump to 20 or more because they are being averaged with co-located iron.

You'll get it and I thin you'll like it. It can be a little much to process at first but... that is what it is.

Good luck!!
