F-75 Discrimination,vs,Notch?

Got out for a little while today and managed to find an area without snow. (Temp. 32 deg.) Area loaded with trash (tabs, caps, etc). Had no trouble separating targets with the big coil. GB was 78 and Fe3 O4 was .03. I was using JE, Disc 65, Sens 35, 4H and had High Iron (8-15) Both Foils (16-25) and Low Nickel (26-30) notched (IN). Found some clad, an old token and one wheat but looks like someone cherry picked the quarters. Was wondering if maybe JE, Disc 6, Sens as high as stable, 4H and High nickel( 31-35) Both tab (36-55) and Both Zinc (56-65) notched (OUT) might work as well or better? I guess I'm wondering if there's any difference between excluding (Discrimination) or including (Notch)? I understand about the Disc below 5 and above 19 arrangement but wonder what the more experienced operators prefer?

If you use JE mode the gain is hot all the time no matter where you have the disc. Just in the DE processing, the gain is higher under disc 5 and over disc 19.

I use disc , but never notch. Since it is impossible to notch out just the bad stuff i go by the tones and the numbers. If the target is deep i check it anyway.

You're exactly right Andy. Even though I had everything below 65 Discriminated out (except for 8 thru 30 notched IN), I still received, and dug, good signals on some square pull tabs.

Went out for a little while today until I froze and used setting of Disc #6, Sens 25, JE, Tone 1 (monotone), GB was around 70 and FE3O4 was .03. Tones 1F & 2F are too whiny. Even though the sensitivity was only 25, the F-75 was picking up targets in the 12 to 13 inch range as per centering the pin pointer. Switched momentarily to 4H and some of the high tones were coming through. I'm surprised there was any identification at all. Problem was; the ground is frozen. With the F-75 and the FX-1, the only thing I need to get good at is digging deep.

I don't care to use notch most of the time, either. How do I "turn it off"? I've simply been turning it down to around 1. Ideas?

Appreciate it.

I think it will always be at a 1 notch even after a reset, mine shows a 1 when i scroll down the menu...
