F 70 Threshold Question :surprised:

The threshold only works as an audio threshold in the "at" (all metal) mode. When you have the disc set at 0 or above, you are in the disc mode and the threshold functions as a "size filter" to filter out signals from tiny pieces of metal. Basically, with the "threshold" control set at -9 the machine ignores weak signals. I usually run it at 0. This is explained near the bottom of p.13 in the manual.

hsjrev,

The threshold has an effect in the discriminate mode too, on mine anyways. It performs like you said, it allows or dis-allows tiny blips and pops from breaking through the silence.

I dont think it is all that effective like it was on a C$ but it works a little.

I would describe it more as a 'squelch' control or setting rather than a threshold.... but both terms work for me.

Hi Tony,

I see you got a F-70 and looks like you like it too. I just got mine on Tuesday and had a chance to try it out today and it is a impressive detector.
On this Threshold question I think the higher it is set in the positive side the more blip and squeaks you will hear and I see where you can hear more what is going on with this and believe it said in the book it will be more noisy, but can hear the deeper ones better. If you like it more silent search the more negative the numbers are the less noise you will hear and the less you will hear the deeper targets.

Good luck with your F-70 and keep us informed on your findings with the F-70.
I ran mine in factory presets today and changed the threshold to a -2 so I can hear more. Got a 1988 quarter at 8 inches with no problem, got a zinc fruit jar cover at a good 13 inches and piece of lead probably buckshot at 6 inches and the F-70 seen it.:surprised: Like any detector you have to listen for the repeatable signals before looking at the meter and by swinging the coil faster will cause most trash to break up or not repeat, but some you just got to dig anyway to be sure.

Hi Rick,

Yea, the F70 seems to be one nice performing detector alright. It finds stuff deep, shallow, on edge and in the trash with ease. I hope the trend continues. I just sent mine back yesterday because of the iron mem recall, so I hope the one they send in its place is as good or better.

The nice thing about the threshold control imo is that even at its max setting, (in air test) the most you lose is one inch on a coin. I ran the detector at the most min sens setting which was 1(one) and noted the distance I could detect it, then increased and decreased the threshold to the max and retested. When set to -9, I lost only 1(one) inch on a coin, so this is good to know imo.

I know you have had and used em all out in your area, I hope the F70 works among the BEST out your way.

Later
Tony

I would be very interested in seeing how the F70 and f-75 do as prospecting machines.
Someone posted that because of the high frequency they operate at they may be right up[ there
with the MXT and the X-70. I think the jury will be out for sometime until people have
actually used them in the field for prospecting and compared them to the compitition.
