F 70 Pinpointing

cx3

New member
The F70 is very difficult to pinpoint with on deep targets. I have a couple of coins buried deep in my test garden a half dollar at 10" and a dime at 8" both coins are silver. The F 70 will easily detect the coins and properly ID both but I cannot pinpoint either coin. When I move the coil off to the side place it near the ground and press pinpoint I immediately hear the ground and the signal from the coin is not strong enough be heard above the ground noise when I move the coil back over the target. I have tried ground balancing prior to pinpointing, I have tried placed the coil on the ground and then pinpointed and lifting the coil slightly off the ground and then move the coil back over the target but the ground noise is overpowering. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks

Jerry,

One suggestion would be to place the coil directly over the target and then press pinpoint. Sometimes you need to tap the pinpoint button a few times to de-tune the detector. What you are trying to do is "shrink" the target. Learning this technique takes a little practice but once you learn it you will never go back. Remember, don't move the coil off to the side and then press pinpoint. Put the coil directly over where you suspect the target is and then press pinpoint and slowly move it left-right-up and back. If you do this correctly, the target will sound much smaller. Like I said, sometimes you have to press the pinpoint button several times while you are over the target to shrink the sound. Practice this technique at home in your test bed and let us know how it works out. I am sure there are many other members of this forum who use the same or similar technique so comments are welcome.

Good Luck,
Leo

It should shrink the large response to a small locating pinpoint for you.

I've been having the same problem with my F70. I tried tapping the pinpoint and it seems to help quite a bit. Great tip.
It found a 1907 Barber dime and a 1942 mercury this morning where many detectors have been.
