F-4 Question regarding nickels and pulltabs....

Jeff Beecham

New member
Nickel vs the common round pulltab....

What is the reading on the F-4??
I'm assuming that the top will show
nickel on both but will the actual
number on the machine help sort through
the pulltabs and find nickels; or does
it basically group the common round pulltab
and nickel together like most machines??

Thanks, Jeff

Yes the number helps, my F4 reads 33 on nickels and it does bounce around a little, but with a slower swing and centering it over the target if reads 33 or smaller I will dig it, A new nickel I dug the other day reads 32, when it bounces up to 34 or 35 100% of the time its been a pull tab.

you will get some broken tabs, foil and peaces of a can that can give off a id of 33 also.

Keep in mind I only hunted with the f4 4 times but I getting more nickels every time out. and loving it :D

Hope this helps
Johnny

I don't have the f4, but I do have the f75 and I believe the number readings are the same for both. If not, they are very close. 28-31 is the nickel range on my f75 and 30 being the optimum reading. As Johnny mentioned, tab tails and small pieces of can slaw will occasionally fool it, but if I can get a 30 lock, it is a nickel. Also, accurate pin pointing is very important for getting an accurate reading. My f75 is a nickel hog and I would think the f4 to be as well. HH jim tn

Lots of junk will imitate a nickle and have gotten some nice gold rings also that were dead nickle..I usually take the junk that imitates it home and experiment as most junk is lighter and may or may not hit as hard. In my area we now have a new tab that will hit nickle dead on everytime so it doesn't get any easier. By the way this is applicable to most ID machines and in most case thru trial and error you will know its a nickle just by the sound.Experimenting and time in the field makes one a more competent detectorist so hang in there.
