F-4 Help

New member
I just bought a new f-4. I have been metal detecting for 15 yrs with a 1265x machine. So I really don't know if this is a problem with the f-4 OR I am just not used to this new technology yet. I have not had much time to try it out since I got it a month ago. All I have spent with it is 2hrs but the dang thing keeps chirping and making all kinda noise. Every time I would bump something on the ground it would chirp. A vine, Chirp ..... A rock Chirp, A stick Chirp. So I pick the coil off the ground, and bump the detector with my hand Chirp, Chirp, Chirp, every time I bump the thing it would chirp. (Aghhhhhhhh) So I get the bright idea to turn the sensitivity down. Finally I eliminated the Chirp at 3 -bars Out of 6-bars on the machine. This however GREATLY reduced my depth. Keep in my mind this is Clean ground. NO trash. No power lines around for miles, No cell towers, substations, etc, So absolutely no RFI. Is this a bad detector out of the box? Is this normal for the newer machines? To run at this sensitivity I would feel like I'm missing an awful lot of stuff. Also the VDI numbers are NOT in anyway shape or form what you would call steady. They are jumping all over the place. I have even tried this machine at 4 different sites. Always far away from any thing that might remotely be causing interference So anyone who uses the f-4 maybe they can answer some of this questions ........ Thanks a Whole Heap............

You have a machine with a problem. All F4's I have used run very quiet even with max sens. ( in most places) Check to make sure that your batteries are tight and strong, coil plug is tight. A good detector does not chirp when you hit it with your hand if the sens is turned as low as you said. Call Fisher and tell them and get a return for repair autherization number.

I use an F4 and mine does not chirp when I hit stuff, or my hand. I have had it chirp because of ground conditions, and in those cases I do have to turn down the sensitivity but usually only for that area. I would say 95% of the time I can run max sins with no problems.

I live in Virginia and so far the soil here is pretty good. Do you live in a highly mineralized part of the country?

Have you tried the other coils? Does it do the same thing with all of them? I use the 8" round 99% of the time. If it does it with all the coils I would for sure consider sending it back.

I have been using the 8" coil. I live near Birmingham Al. The ground has a lot of Iron ore in it. However I got a chance to take it out yesterday for an additional 2 hrs. Went to several sites AWAY from the iron ore area. and I can run it with the sensitivity at half but that is it. and Yes it does it with all coils. So I think it is a bad one out of the box. I really didn't think it was acting right but just wanted to double check on here before I raise sand... LOL

Thanks

Sorry to hear you got a bad machine.
Hopefully Fisher will swap the machine out.
Have you called customer service yet?
