Eye loop and connected lag screw

broadestpower

New member
I found a eye loop about 2.5 inches in diameter connected to a 3 inch lag screw. I was thinking vintage
I found a lock in the same area and that dates to 1927. I'll try and download the the picture so you can get the
picture literally. Thanks for looks, this was in a electrolysis bath for 24 hours. The picture was pre elecrolysis.
My question is do you think this was a slave shackle tie down or boat related anchor. This was found about 30ft
off of a pond. The lead weight appears to be home made as well.

the loop and screw would likely be for hitching a horse to or attached to a barn wall to hang tools, ect. Many uses make it hard to tell what it was actually used for. The lock is really cool.

Thanks for the look and for your valued opinion. The lock is a Corbin lock it is actually one of the earlier combo locks maybe I can try and post a face picture later. Again thanks for look. George CT

That loop and lag screw are common in barns for cross tying horses or as a single to tie a horse as well as any other use you might think of. They are still sold in the hardware stores and horse tack catalogs today.

Geezzz ...there are tons of uses for a eye loop and a lag screw and 100,000's of 1000's have been made . Let's just keep a open mind and think about the many things besides horses that could have been tied down or maybe roped down that are not "slave related" . I used to use a home made weight similar to that for practice casting when I was a kid . The lock is cool and old and by the description of the area everything could have been related to boat use in the old pond that used to be there and has nothing to do with a slave shackle . Of coarse , if you want to believe it's a part of the slave shackle that's fine , and how knows maybe the lock was lost by Houdini .
To bad forums like this weren't around in the 80's cause I had buckets of rusty iron I tossed never knowing what any of it was but unless it was a 100% a desirable relic I had no reason to hang onto it .

We still have neighborhoods here in Portland, OR where these are still in the curbing cement including along the side street of our church. They were for tethering horses at the curb. My bet is that this is one of those.
