Exterra 70

How is the Exterra 70 on salt water beaches. I know this subject has come up before but I didn't need to know then.

It will not achieve the depth of a dual or multi-freq in the damp/wet sand, but of all the single freqs I have tried it does best.

As I have most interest in gold I use the HF DD coil, which also is most immune to the combo of salt & black sand I face.

My settings:

Beach GB mode w/ Tracking ON.
Pattern 1 default.
Sens @ 15.

With Tracking ON you may Track out small gold(chains, charms)because it is very fast in Beach mode, but because of the varying black sand conditions I face I find the stability is worth it.

In the dry sand if you have a few years detecting experience you can go crazy with running on the edge of stability:

Normal GB w/ Tracking OFF.
Pattern 1, but I ACCEPT some negative numbers depending on foil conditions.
Sens @ as hot as I can get it to run stable 25+.

Now I have noted, that lets say the top 6 inches of sand is dry, but it is damp from there and deeper. This seems to lead to some very deep targets 12+ as the damp sand seems to couple the signal very well.

Here's some info from a previous post on Pinpointing:

On Saltwater beaches in the damp/wet sand the Pinpoint on the X-machines like many single freq machines will simply not work. My personal preference for a hunting style is to check a hole once I have removed a scoop/shovel full of sand, before I dump it. Unfortunately on the saltwater beaches I hunt, the X-machines will respond to an empty hole in the damp or wet sand in Coin/Disc mode. I have been pondering a couple of solutions to the

I'll second that; thanks Bill; Very good info.

Heading for the GA & FL coast for November & I'll definitely have this information with me.:clapping:

Hi Bill,
Can you explain what you mean by running 22 tones in prospecting mode?

Ive never tried the prospecting mode in wet sand at the ocean but I have run it in all metal, beach mode and I have to keep the sens about 14 or 15 to keep it from falsing. This works quite well but your right it doesnt compare to a Sov or Explorer.

Ill add also that the Advantage works really well in wet sand, just have to turn the sens down a bit and I think it might actually work a little better than my 70. Again, not up to par with the multi freq minelabs but good enough for some places.

Prospecting mode allows you to set the threshold tones from 1 to 30 with 22 being factory default. As you move over a target the frequency and loudness will increase. In practical terms it sounds very much like the Pinpoint in Coins mode, and many X70 owners prefer it for Pinpointing since it doesn't auto-tune.

The X70 for me provides a very specific capability. I only hunt the Maine coast in the winter after the seasonal storms churn up the beaches. That churning includes bringing ashore a lot of iron, as you can see here in these excerpts on the history of Old Orchard Beach, Maine.
