Exterra 305, 505, 705

I am trying to find a deep tonal id machine to complement my Vaquero. I have been drawn to the exterra series and wanted to know which gives you more bang for the buck (305, 505, 705). I generally hunt coins, jewelry, and relics in trashy areas with a lot of iron in clay soil. I do not generally prospect for gold. All input welcome. Thx,
Andy from NC

You can get a used x terra 70 for around 300. That would be my choice. I have a 705 and it is great but I like the menu of the 70 better. I have ran xterras for several years now and really like them.

This is the deepest Tonal/ID unit I've ever run Andy.

It's a 305 with a 14.5" Mid Freq All Terrain coil. Admittedly it has an audio mod I did on it, but even without that mod done, the set up is far deeper/truer than any unit with ID. Including the 705 with same set up, and FBS units with same coil inland.

Realistically, you can't go wrong with any of them, but there are very distinct differences in them that are reflected in their respective prices.

The 305 is the entry level machine. It has manual adjustable GB, adjustable Threshold, has 3 Noise Cancel channels, is limited to running 7.5kHz or 18.75kHz coils, has 12 notch DISC, choice of 1,2,3, or 12 tone audio, two customizable savable DISC pattern programs, and true All Metal.

The 505 also has Manual GB, adjustable Threshold, has 5 Noise Cancel channels ,can run 3kHz, 7.5kHz, or 18.75kHz coils, has 19 notch DISC, choice of 1,2,3,4, or 19 tone audio, 3 savable DISC programs, and All Metal.

The 705 is the top of the X-terra line, and IMO is the most bang for the buck in the whole detecting world (the best kept secret). It has Manual and Auto GB, GB Tracking, GB Tracking Offset, all of which function in C/T, Beach, and Prospector modes. Like the 505 it has 5 NC channels, can run all three frequency coils, and All Metal, but it also has choice of 1,2,3,4,or 28 tone audio, 28 notch DISC, two Pinpointing modes (ID & sizing), 4 storable DISC patterns, and a backlight!

Considering that I paid $300 for my 705 several years ago, I'd look for a good used one if I were you. There are some really good deals out there if you take the time to look and aren't in a hurry. In general the line is more trouble free than most by any manufacturer, and if you can score one that still has warranty on it you can transfer it.

The 305 on top runs a 6" concentric coil. It hits truer and deeper ,and works through trash better with that coil on than any of my small coil set ups.
The 705 with Coiltek Digger coil below is a bottle cap killer and I find that combo the best for I'Ding junk. But due to the 705/3kHz sensitivity drop needed, the 305 hits far deeper.

That may well be true in your neck of the woods, but I don't believe that your conditions are that universal. Here, I don't have to drop my SENS that much with the Coiltek 3kHz coils, and don't have to drop it at all with the Minelab 9" 3kHz coil.

Today I used my 305 with the standard coil in a park I never tried.
I must say it is simple to use and ID's pretty accurately.

I am leaning strongly towards an Xterra 305 with multiple coils. I don't want bells and whistles, just depth and ID accuracy. Any comments are appreciated.

I was in your predicament four or five years ago. Wanted a good detector but didn't want too much of one in case I didn't use it as much as I thought I would. I settled on the 505 for the extra TID'S and finer adjustments. I'm not at all disappointed with my decision. Actually use it more than I figured. I dont regret buying the 705, would be nice to have one, but the 505 fills my needs just fine. Now I think if I purchased the 305 first, I'd be upgrading at least once already.

I am looking for a machine with the most depth for the money. I am thinking all the machines mentioned have the same depth, just added bells and whistles. Am I correct? I have a Vaquero at present and want more depth with lead especially.

Forum member "7centsworth" does more hunting for lead than any other that I'm aware of, and he does pretty good!
Check out some of his posts HERE.

On the 305 which of these would go deeper: a Cors12x13 DD 18.75kHz or a Minelab 15 inch round DD 18.75 kHz made by coiltek?

Hey thanks!
Was leaning that way. Thanks for the nudge.
Let you know how well it works when this nasty white stuff goes away.

Thanks again.
