External Speaker still on with my new Grey Ghosts

New member
Just got a pair of Grey Ghost Ultimates for my Etrac.

When I plug the new headphones into the Etrac, sounds still come from the external headphones. Not as loud, more of a whisper sound, but the beeps are still there. I am not impressed, I want the Etrac's external speaker to be silent as it does with my older headphones. Anyone encounter this before?

Sounds to me like could be either the plug not being in all the way or someone screwed the wiring up in the new phones and they are crossed. I would venture to say its the phones and would send them back. Sounds like factory defect to me. Good luck and HH Joe

I wanted to test out the volume control on my new Ultimate Headphones. What I did was set the volume limit and volume gain on my E-trac to max setting to check out the Grey Ghost volume limiting circuit and volume control. What I noticed was that sounds were "bleeding" from the E-trac's external speaker. So I switched to my old pair and kept the E-trac volume limt and gain to maximum. Behold, you can hear sounds comming from the external speaker. Not high sounds, but they are there, bleeding through. I never placed the detectors volume control to high before because my old headphones do not have volume control.

So what should the volume settings should set on the E-trac? I thought it should be set to maximum and use the Grey Ghost volume control to reduce the sound.
According to the link:
http://www.rtgstore.com/headphones.htm
"Without the limiting circuit engaged, we recommend starting with a minimal headphone volume control setting with detector volume at maximum, then gradually increase headphone volume controls as needed and tolerated"

However, when I place the E-trac on max setting, sounds bled through. Is this the proper way? Can anyone maximum the volume on their E-trac and confirm if sounds are bleeding out from the external speaker?

I always run with both detector and phones maxed out and I use grey ghost ndt's. I know sounds crazy to be maxed out right? Next time out I will let you know. I never noticed before.

I use GG ultimates on my Minelabs along with Killer B Wasp and have no problems at all. As bad as my hearing is I have no reason to max out all the audio on my machines or phones. Hope you get your problems resolved. HH :minelab:

if on your old headphones is works silent,I think is headphones electronic, similar situation I have on my explorer when I use headphones volume regulator with control unit for CD player.

Do you max out the volume gain and limit settings on the E-trac? I notice the sound bleeding through the E-trac's external speaker (not loud, more of a wisper in volume but the sound is there.)
When I lower the max volume gain and limit settings on the E-trac, the bleeding goes away.

On a side note,
I took the Grey Ghost headphones out in the field today. Had the headphones' volume control at maximum and the E-trac's gain at a level that was comfortable to my ears. Grey Ghosts sound nice and clean on targets. I enjoyed using them tonight. Wonder sound, they are a great headphone.

If only the E-trac didn't bleed sound from the external volume when placing the detector's volume gain at maximum.
