I bought some Plasti Dip liquid and dipped my Harbor Freight pin-pointer tip into it giving it several coats. This added a protective shield to the end that gets scraped though the spoils of an excavated hole and gets plowed into the sides of excavated holes. The layer is perhaps only 0.020" thick and it is tough and waterproof also.
I also bought a can of spray Plasti Dip in the color black and sprayed it to the bottom and side surfaces of my 8" search coil. It it imperceivable once dry and also is perhaps only 0.015" thick and waterproof. It seems to make a heck of a lot more sense treating the search coil this way as opposed to buying a molder cover for it to protect it.
