Extended shaft clean field sweeping:detecting:

I ran that long shaft out on the 70...measures 38" from back of box to coil bolt. Then I hit a football field. GB at 78 sens waaay up to 68...all other settings stayed the same, a guy has to make sure he hasnt disced or notched out iron by throwing the screwdriver down on the ground and making sure it sounds off...anyway, on a nice level field a guy is getting at least 6' reach on the strong arm side, and 4' on the off side...since the rig is so light, a guy can have that 11"dd coil floating 3" off the ground, slight bend in the knees, and let that coil transcribe a nice smooth arc of nearly 270 degrees around your body. Talk about ground coverage! Very easy to wipe every target out of the main hot areas like out in front of where the cheerleaders set up in a gosh darn hurry!. If you develop a nice steady rocking motion side to side as you swing, you can cut a huge swath

This works best in a wide open field, flat grass, target poor environment...the F rigs are so light and balanced, they float in your hand and it is not hard on a guy trying to control it, momentum carries the swing, and you are just guiding and controlling coil height and overlap...If any of you hunt wide open fields/beaches, you should give it a try. Maximizes the strengths of the rig, fast recovery, ergonomics allow us to do this kind of hunting whereas most other rigs cant.

What about the "bounce" technique for pinpointing?

Even though I have a good PP, I'm interested in the bounce for shallow targets.

Not for the weak ................:clapping:

No really boys, its quite comfortable, more than a shorter swing where you are powering the stops and starts with your elbow/shoulder....its smooth momentum doing the work..more from the body than anything, arm stays straight, upper body tilts left or right at the hips to get the swing going, and your arm and a few fingers guide the rig.....and you dont walk as much, so its a slower stride, little steps to advance....

massive coverage on a big open field/beach.

That is a good technique, Mud. I've done that often myself. First time I heard about it was on the Golden Olde webpage. That site isn't around anymore I'm afraid. The guy died. Luckily I have a penchant for mirroring the good webpages so I can view them offline. This guy took it one step further. He grabbed his upper rod right in front of the arm rest and swung from there....It works. I still do it ocassionally.

Tom D. shows these himself on his beach video.

I think Alan Hansel (may have misspelt his name) wrote about this as well on his webpage. He had THE premier beach and shallow water treasure hunting webpage. His page is long gone from the public eye as well. If I want to know something about beach of shallow water treasure hunting I go read his site.

So you are in good company, mudpuppy!

Hillis! Yeah, that was a great site!:clapping:

I learned a lot from it as well but lost its link...Norm Garnush was his name, great detectorist, and freely shared his stories and style..makes for some good reading...you might want to see if you can attach Norms and Alans if you can for some of the fellows to read..we should ALL have them bookmarked to read for inspiration on those days when the going gets tough!

I have a bad shoulder and i have been using the upper body rotating style for a while now. Keep the elbow tucked in close to the side and rotate the upper body as i swing.I use a ctx and i keep the shaft extended all the way out and i can cover some ground and does not hurt my shoulder.
