Hi, I just purchased an ExplorXS and trying to use the basic mode to learn. Well I buried a quarter 5 inches in the ground and it would not even detect it. I could use all the help I can get to learn how to program the unit as I am lost using the instruction book. I need simple step by step instructions. Thanks!!!!! Bill

Turn on the detector, then press the upper left button until the sensitivity is up to at least 20. Now try that 5" deep quarter again & let us know if you are hearing it. HH, George (MN)

welcome Bill,
I too am a newbie to the explorer, and are having many problems with the detecter finding coins that I have buried. Did you do a air test on the machine? I have no broblems with the machine when I do an air test, but when I put the coil to my yard I cant get nothing, I dont know all that much yet, but I do have a suggestion, I know it is extremely inportant to make sure there is nothing in the area you are buriing your coins, the trash in the ground will cause alot of interference. try this, when turning on the unit hold on button to get into factory settings, press iron mask button once, set iron mask to-16,press iron mask button again to enter detect mode, set sensitivity to 30, leave in semi auto, now using this setting check the area you want to use for your test garden, and remove any target you find, once the area is cleaned out, you can convert back to the factory pre-sets, and put some coins back in the cleaned area, and try again, keep the coins shallow at first, dont know if this will help, but I know my yard is so trashy I cant get no good signals. good luck

What most people don't realize is that the only thing putting a coin in the ground does is hide the coin from site. Newly buried coins have no halo built up so they are the same as air testing the same coin. It takes a couple of years in the ground to build up the halo enough to boost the signal to get the added depth you get on old coins.
Use the iron mask settings Geo suggested to find the coin. At 5" inches with the stock coil it should find it using iron mask and max sensitivity, but don't expect to hear a loud signal. A new coin at 5" is at the edge of the detection range. It will be faint like a 10" deep oldie. This is why coins that are disturbed by digging often "disappear".
