Hi All,
I use a Sov XSPro at the moment.
There is a special offer on for the Explorer X.
The savings are huge.

John. I believe the 3 functions you'll be missing in the explorer s are 1. The automatic noise cancel, 2.The learn-edit modes, and 3. the backlight.
I have the xs, and for most of my searching I dont use the learn edit. This is not to say that it's not a good feature because it is, it enables the user to discriminate any unwanted items. For example, if you were searching a beach and you needed to knock out say ring pulls, you can pass the coil over one, edit it out and find no more of that type of ring pull. On the other hand, if you where doing a park and you wanted to find nothing but

Thanks Fergs
I will think on for a while.
Perhaps that is why the X`s are on such a big savings offer.
Jerry.

John,
I would highly recommend against trying to save some money and going with the X instead of the XS. Fergs has told you some of the things you'll be missing out on, but not everything. For example, you'll probably quickly get tired of feeding the machine those expensive alkalines, and you can't use regular rechargeables in the battery pack because you wouldn't have enough voltage. So you would probably go out and buy the charger and battery pack that comes standard with the XS. The going rate right now I think in US dollars is $65 for the battery pack, $40 for the home charger and $40 for the car charger. So right off the bat, there is half of the money you are talking about saving. You'll end up putting it right back into the battery system. In addition to the learn function, you will be without the edit function that you use to "fine tune" the discrimination patterns. And you WILL NOT be able to save your custom discrimination patterns. The Explorer XS allows you to save 6 patterns. For example, I have my "coins only" pattern that I generated by teaching the machine via the learn function to accept only the types of coins I wanted. Sometimes, I only have a half hour or so to spend at the local school, and I only want to try and quickly find a couple of silver coins or old wheaties. I don't want to be distracted by those tempting low tones that could be indicative of jewelry. I load my "coins only" pattern and try to find a couple of quick keepers in the alloted search time. At other times, it is just the opposite. I go to the school with the idea to try and find some jewelry, loading my "jewelry only" custom pattern which ignores almost all of the coins. And like Fergs said, I also use the noise cancellation feature a lot. Sometimes I hunt around power lines, and if you want to pump up the sensitivity, you often have to find a real clean channel. Doing this manually (running through 10 channels and trying to figure out the cleanest) would surely take some time. Any by the time you get to the 10th channel, I don't know how you remember which was the cleanest. With the noise cancellation feature, I place the coil in its search position, press the button, listen to the music as it plays a short tune for each of the channels it checks, and within a minute, I am using the optimum channel for the hunting condition.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the advice you have got me convinced
I hope to spend some of my savings tomorrow.
Best Wishes,
Jerry.

you can use nimh batteries in the alkyline pack.. I do it all the time.. wont work with the Sov, but works fine with the explorer.. actually the 1600 mah nimh batterys I use last longer than the pack that comes with the Explorer

Jim,
Then the chart on page 92 of the owners manual must be pretty accurate. It shows the cutoff voltage to be 8.5 volts, regardless of the batteries used. You are charging your 8 cells to a total voltage of 9.6 volts, above the cutoff. But I would never have predicted that your 1600 mah cells starting at that level would outlast the Minelab pack which should be starting out at around 12 volts. That is, 12 volts according to the chart, but admittedly, I have never checked its voltage after charging. And, according to the chart, the Minelab pack won't drop down to 9.6 volts until about 10.5 hours of usage. But I seem to have gotten an extremely good pack because I got over 11 hours on my very first charge. And I guess it's gotten a little better since. But I usually let it charge for 20+ hours at a time. And I usually don't hunt more than several hours at a time. Any battery lasts longer if you rest it between discharges. I'm not sure how long mine would last if I just turned it on and let it go to the end.
