Explorer XS Price

I have the chance to buy a Explorer XS for $500 bucks. Is this a good price, I have been wanting a minelab for a long time now and thought that this would be a good deal. The machine is in excellent shape, comes with extra batteries and what not, the andy book for explorers and etracs, no extra coils or anything like that. I just don't want to spend that much on something when I could buy the next one up for a few more dollars. Any help would you could give in this would help me out a lot, Thanks guys. Can't wait to post in here one day with my explorer finds.

hello its good explorer and if its in excellent condition its even better, check what date appear when you turn on your explorer 1999 or 2000 i heard that in earlye models was some problems but cant say if its true.right price is 450$. good luck Stasys

Not sure about the price... Will say that I paid twice that brand new in 2000... Great machine!

Its a buyers market out there right now.. I would pass on a XS for $500. The Explorer II & SE have many improvements & you should be able to find a Explorer II for $500 or a SE for $600.. Look for one with a Pro coil....

details
XS
2 versions of firmware
early models have cracking problem in cam lock area
two different style upper shafts, neither work with later models
no stand
1/8 headphone jack

Explorer II fixed all the above plus has a faster processor, carbon fiber lower shaft, upper shafts same as SE & Etrac except for color

SE
better menus, VCO pinpointing, avoid the slimline coil though

"Quote from Andy's Explorer II field test....
Internally, the advancement in computer technology since the Explorer XS was released has allowed the Minelab engineers to improve on an already proven circuit design. The new software running on an enhanced microprocessor offers several improvements including a more stable threshold and modified processing algorithm, resulting in increased detection depth, faster and more accurate response to small or deep targets as well as those in high-trash areas, and the addition of a Dual Digital Display allowing accurate target identification in the Digital mode which is preferred by some users."

Quote from Andy's Explorer SE field test
"This unique circuit is called SmartFind and one noticeable improvement of the SE over its predecessors is the speed at which the cursor on the screen updates the probable ID of the detected target (thanks to a faster processor under the hood)."

NO NO NO its the same speed under coil! and they are the same deep except if you use pro coil- everything ells is just a bit mystification if we talk about speed and deepness.

Thanks guys, I already sort of committed to the purchase of the machine, and can't turn back now. You live and you learn. I will use it for awhile and see how much I love it, and then sell it for a few bucks less and put the money towards a newer Explorer. I hope to at least post a couple of finds this year yet before the snow flies, but we will see.

Again, not sure about the price, but I don't believe you'll be disappointed.... What I will say is, when I first got my Explorer and used it the first few times, I hated it... The multitude of sounds and input were overwhelming at first... I suggest you try it out in a relatively clean area at first until you get a grip on what the machine is trying to tell you... Once you get the hang of it, you'll never want to use anything else... These days I mainly hunt on sound and fall back on lock on, SmartScreen positioning, and depth for further verification of target.... Good luck, V-man

The faster processor speed is true with the biggest difference being between the XS and the EXII. My diggin partner and I have hunted together with the 2 machines and if we are hunting a trashy area using a coin pattern he does better because his recovery time is quicker. I quit using patterns and now hunt with IM 15 or 16 so it is a non issue for me now. As far as increased depth that simply isnt true. The XS is just as deep as the SE

I used to hunt with nothing but sound on another older detector I had, I loved it. I really like hunting by sound instead of using the screen. I think I will adapt very quickly to it and have a great time using it. I have wanted the Explorer because of that reason, the sound I think is the only way to hunt, I do like the single tone machines I have but would like to have something deeper and simply more than what I have. I can't wait to get it paid off and start using it. The only thing I hope is that I get it paid off before the snow files, I will still hunt as long as the ground is not frozen. So again thanks for everything guys, and I am sure I will be back with questions about the XS.
