Explorer XS newbie

I Have been reading all your post on here for about 6 months just trying to find out who's who's. I recently bought an XS off Mark(Ohio),great guy by the way and a smooth transaction. Unfortunately I live in northern Indiana and haven't had a chance to dig. I did make a custom program for all the old coins that I have been finding around here just to see if I'm catching on to this thing. I have 5 good targets mark for the thaw and can't wait to see if this machine is talking my language or filling my head full of dought. All of my experience has been with tesoros( deleon, Silver u-max) I still have the u-max for quick hunts or to just test an area. I'm hoping to be able to post some nice finds on here with the explorer. Brian

Hey Brian, Your gonna love it, just go slow and learn the basics with it first and then you'll be pulling some great items out of your kneck of the woods:detecting:
I myself and just getting back into detecting after about a year off due to health reasons.

Hey Brian.....reading your post just jogged my memory... I'm pretty sure I also had an old coins program loaded in one of the customs settings.. I don't remember deleteing it so it might still be there ?? Have you read thru the book I included with the detector... It helped me quite abit when I was just starting out with the beast.....Your going to be pleasantly surprised when you re-visit all those areas that you've hunted with the tesoros... Deep silver is hiding below..

Thanks also for the kind word in your post too.. Our transaction went perfect..

Give a hollar if I could help ya.

Mark ( ohio )

Hey Mark, Yeah I've probably read 5 times and will read it again soon. I know playing with in the house is not the same as putting to the ground. I figure if I pratice going thru the screens and making changes will help me with the xs when I get to detect. Make things quicker in the field

you will probably get frustrated at first til you find a good program that works in your area and learning the Explorer language can be like learning Korean... Just stick with it and keep your head up and you'll be carrying on a good conversation with it in no time. Good luck!!

Hey Brian,
looking forward to all the great finds you will eventually be posting. The great part about learning the Explorer for me has been, and still is, the constant discovery of how well it detects coins on the fringe of the detecting field. Some people get started with it and want all of those great finds to start happening the first day and then get frustrated when it doesn't happen. You hang in there and stay focused.

My plan is to go to a few sites that I cleaned out with the deleon. I know no site is ever cleaned out but I have a couple that I've been to more than 6 times and these are private home sites that have produced old silver and indians. I knew the deleon had come to it's limits when the good finds dried up. I always ran it in the foil range so I know that i got a good chunk of the trash , because my pouch was always full of it. So I'm going to practice on these sites for the deeper stuff and will learn the cherry picken stuff somewhere else. I really appreciate all the postitive remarks. I know people get frustrated with the explorers, it's just not going to be me.

Hey BIGPAPPA ...

Just a note to say Welcome to the Newbie clan ...:chase:... It is definitely a real challenge to learn all this stuff .:look:.... I have been reading and researching, trying programs, air testing, tearing out my hair, kicking rocks, and scanning all the posts for bits of wisdom since I got my XS in November.:stars:...... and although I still have a long way to go..... I do feel that I am confused on a much higher level than I was a few weeks ago ..... :stars::help:
Wish you the best .... Bill

Welcome Brian! I hope you do well with your new machine. If you don't have too much snow down there, you can probably hunt in the woods (if you have a wooded site). It must be the leaves that keep the ground insulated. I have hunted woods up here throughout the winter (SW MI). Don't let the XS scare you - it is really a simple machine to operate. Learn the tones. Start in factory preset until you get the hang of what it is telling you.
