Explorer XS lower rod ?

I was wondering how come it is so hard to get the cable on the 8'' minelab coil in the little grove in the rod ? I finally got it in but now the rod is to tight on the shaft. Are they all like this ? I guess I will have to buy the newer style carbon shaft. I guess that is why they did away with this design. Or am I doing something wrong ?

Harold buy new type rod, you will save time, health and coil cables, some people to put cable in the old style rod spray with WD but you can use any lubricant which not damage cable plastic. good luck Stasys

Thank's for the response! I already have one on the way once I could locate one. I did try graphite lube but didn't help at all. I guess not many guys still using the xs explorer's any more. I bought mine as a second machine to my E-trac. I got a deal I couldn't refuse. I never had an Explorer before. I hope coming from the E-trac it is a smooth transition.

Okay.........I've been off for a while.........just browsing the forums and came across this. Some info FYI:

1- DO NOT use any petroleum based lubricate on rubber or plastics. It will break them down eventually. I know this from years of experience. A good safe lubricate for use in a case such as this is good old fashion baby powder......and a little goes a long way!

2- If you start at the coil and leave just a bit of slack for adjusting the coil, start the cable into the bottom of the channel, holding the start with your thumb, gently stretch the cable (this elongates it some) and feed it into the groove a little at a time. The stretching and pulling causes the cable diameter to be reduce enough to press into the channel. Later it will slowly relax making for a nice snug fit. It is important to bottom it out in the channel, or the cable will rub the inside of the upper rod making it very hard to adjust.
