explorer xs keeps losing Threshold

Nascarfan

New member
Hi group, This is my first post on this forum. I'm a new user of the explorer xs and I was wanting some opinions on what to do when my threshold is gone all of a sudden. I'm running in factory presets right now and sometimes I've got my sensitivity turned up to around 26 or so.....mostly in manual!!! It seems that whenever I get close to a building I notice it more so. And depth, let's just say that a quarter air test, I have to get pretty darn close to it before it registers.....I've tried backing the sensitivity down and most of the time its still very weak if even there at all....Thanks in advance for your help, Nascarfan
ps- Is this just the mineralization in the ground!!! Someone told me the other day that when you get in really trashy ground that the detector will null out, I can't believe that this is just trashy ground because my threshold would come back!!

It may be your soil, for instance in Alabama, etc, but no need to worry, I loose threshold a lot and it still will hit the targets. Now on the subject of air test on the quarter, you should pick it up at a least 10" to 12" with stock coil but if you are in congested trashy area, then it could be different. Let us know about the air tests, sweep slowly, you may have a problem with your unit. Turn down your iron mask to at least -13 and see what happens.

Thats the way a threshold works as it nulls when going over discriminated target..I would guees your ground or some outside interference is the culprit..
Certaily always the chance your unit is malfunctioning and may need repairs. Trying a similiar unit (perhaps a clubmembers) may let you know right away.

Thanks guys, Steve, I am on the preset IM which is -6 I believe.....So I am quite a ways from -14 IM. I am still very impressed with this machine...My finds have definitly gone up since I bought this unit. I did buy this unit used off of ebay, so I am concerned there could've been a problem with it......I might send it in once the snow starts flying, just to have it looked over good!!! Appreciate the replies! Nascarfan

Yeah, don't worry for now about getting your IM too low, then later you can lower it to accept more if you like. One thing you can do is use a wide open screen (program screen) and use your IM to whatever is comfortable to you then you can toggle between the two when you have a signal to break thru your IM setting, then check signal with wide open screen to see if you want to investigate the signal more. that's just a suggestion, your unit it probably ok, it's just a different animal from other detectors, sounds like you are doing well with it, I am still using the XS, great detector.Take care,HH,
Steve(MS)
