Explorer XS HELP

Hi there ,
This is very interesting stuff here, as Im only new to the metal detecting game I descided to buy a minelab explorer XS, Im having trouble detecting with it, getting erratic noises and when you lay a coin on the ground i dont get any signal saying theres a coin there. I know many may have had the same problem and figured it out so maybe someone out there will be able to give me a few tips to get going. Im looking forward in finding coins and other items but so far im a little frustrated.

you get no signal with the coin on top of the ground? your not doing it inside the house are you?.. if you are thats the way it behaves inside... If your outside make sure you dont have the target rejected.. hit detect button till your on the smart screen, hit iron mask twice to put it in iron mask mode and try again.. if still no signal somethings wrong with your machine, or your over a very large chunk of iron, try different spots....
