Explorer XS headphone jack

Yesterday I was getting problems with left channel on my headphones, when I checked I noticed the headphones socket (set in explorer) was loose. Has anyone else experienced this? Is it repairable or do I need to send it to Minelab to do? I need the detector for next weekend so dont wanna send it away otherwise I will miss out on a very good rally!
Thanks (I hope this is acceptable in this forum, my apologies if not)
Dave

I understand from the owner of Prostock Detectors in Plainwell, MI that the speaker jack is held in place with hot glue. For this reason it's not advisable to leave your detector in a hot car or other hot environment. I will bet that if you have a hot glue gun you can do the repair yourself. I'm new to the XS so I have no clue as to how to dissassemble it. Maybe someone else here at the classroom can give you that information.

It seems quite a few people have had problems like that, I personally have never had it happen, but I use the sunray stand with the adapter since day one, so I never have to unplug the 1/8th inch jack.. Highly doubt you can even get the detector to Las Vegas by next weekend.. probably take 10 days to get it back unless you overnighted it..

So in that case I think they send it to Ireland. I could be wrong though, wouldn't be the first time or the last. <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)">
Anyway, Jim is correct. The sunray stand is the way to go, but if you are thrifty, you can make your own if it is too difficult to get the Sunray.
Both of my explorers I have never had a problem and the first one I used without a stand the first 6 months or so, but it does happen. It is not just yours. The second one I got, I noticed that with pressure, I could move the headphone jack with the 1/8" plug of my Stand. It did not cut out or anything, but I could move it a little. I took some two ton epoxy and a tooth pick and put a small amount around the female jack and the plasitc. A very small amount! Held it good and that has been a while ago and it is still solid. I have only used the Sunray stand after that though.

I believe there is also a problem with some headphone jacks, that when you plug the headphones in,the speaker still operates, instead of cutting off . This can reduce the volume to the headphones.
I had my jack replaced,by minelab, and it is solid ,and the volume to the headphones is a lot better.

I wish Minelab would go the a normal 1/4" jack. The 1/8th just isn't very durable (neither are the stock headphones) and adapters for 1/4" headphones, which is the standard, just add another link in the chain of things to go wrong.

Hey Dave,
I had the same problem, broke the jack. If you are a bit handy you can buy a replacement 1/8 jack at radio shack. It requires taking the explorer apart and doing some soldering. When mine broke Sun-ray was out of adaptor stands for at least a couple of weeks so I decided to go another route. Instead of replacing the broken jack with another 1/8 jack that was likely to break again I put in a 1/4 socket on a dongle and it works fine. You will lose the ability to use the explorers internal speaker with this set up but I haven't found this to be a problem.
I'm losing my picture posting virginity on this one. Was hoping to bust my cherry with some nice coin finds but haven't been going out in the heat and dryness.

I also had the same problem. the 1/8 jack at radio shack was a little heaver buil than the one in the explorer but same size externally. melted a couple of them before getting the soulder right but i'm not a good soulderer. havn't had trouble with jack since. Had to silicone it in real good also. I think part of the problem is that it doesn't protrude far enough out to make good contact with the male end. good luck, pick up extra jacks while you're at the radio shack, they are cheap anyway.
