explorer xs depth problems

I have owned my xs for two months and as yet cannot find any coins deeper than three inches. I have air tested the unit with both old and new coins, air on a 1918 liberty half 10 to 11 inches, in the ground 2.5 to a max of three inches. I have soil tested it in indiana, michigan, ilinois and missouri, also on freashwater beach sand. Sensitivity 16 to 32, deep, fast, all combinations but no depth on coins greater than three inches. One last thing if i dig a hale 4 inches deep it will not detect a dime quarter or half dollar even when uncovered. Did I get gyped by add hype of 8 inches plus. Help please

Something must be wrong with your machine. You should be able to turn it on in factory preset and get great depth in air and ground. You may need to send it back for a checkup.

Someone had a similar problem and it just needed to be reset.. read down below.. I think they said they had to turn it on and pull out the battery or something.. worth a shot...

I used mine for the first time today and I pulled a few dimes out that were at least 6 or 7 inches deep. This was at the beach. Something must be wrong with your settings or maybe it needs to go back to the shop for a check-up.

I just bought a new xs and right out of the box with presets easily digging coins on salt and fresh water beaches this week and easily doing 8 to 10 inches, you missing something.

Document your findings and if needed send to minelab repair with all info .This would be an unusual problem and they will need all the information they can get.

First turn on your detector and then remove the battery while the machine is still on. This is supposed to reset the processor. Then reinstall the battery and turn the machine back on.
Make sure that you have your detector in "Manual Sensitivity" and run the sensitivity as high as you can stand it.
My Explorer XS was air testing to only 5 inches with a dime and had a distrubance in the Threshold Tone to only 7 inches before I did the above procedures. Now (sens. at 32 manual) I get a good tone at 8 inches and a Threshold disturbance at 12 inches. If you read enough of these posts, you will find that coins that have been in the ground for some time develop a "halo" around them and allow for deeper detection than during air testing. I am digging deeper coins now also.
Hope this helps
Jerry

I just wanted to say thanks to you and the other guys who responded to my plea for help. I tried your method of pulling batteries while unit was on, cured my problem. Also I found this condition occurs when changing from alkyline batteries to the rechargables. Also 2 inches more depth on the alkys. Could it be the 12 volt alkys versus the 9.5 from the nimh don't have the kick. I tried 2 different rechargable batteries, both fully charged. Again thanks for the advise, my unit is working right.
