explorer xs coil waterproof?

I am waiting on a used minelab xs that I purchased on e-bay and reading some comments on forums seemed to indicate that the stock coil is NOT waterproof. Is that possible? how could you use it at the beach if it is not waterproof. any clarification would help greatly as I don't want to ruin it.
