explorer xs and coil choices

hello all. i just converted over to minelab about 6 months ago. i had used nothing but whites machine till then, i have a explorer xs and 5 coils, i have yet to have that big moment so i can say that the minelab and all its hype about being the ultimate detector is true, i have used the different coils and while all have there good and bads none has really hit home to the fact that there better than a whites machine, i am really working hard to getting this machine down as i am buried in it, per say as far as cost.the deepest target i have dug was a dime at 7" ( my xlt could do this all day long and much faster ). PlEASE some of you longtime explorer users enlightin me .

Personally the problem with experimenting with 5 coils they all act a little different. I would stay with the stock 10.5...learn it well and then experiment..
All I use is the second run of the XS model and 10 inch silver dimes are no problem so perhaps you have a faulty unit or even the user is faulty.
Remember Whites are fast swingers and Explorer series are slow swingers so that may be a problem right off the bat...

well i am having a little problem with how slow is slow. i have used the stock coil and find it is well balanced and seems to work 'ok. i have also tried the 6"dd ecelerater coil and really like it ,but it lacks depth only good to about 4-6 ". the 10x14 seems to be a little deeper but is just too heavy for a good days outing. i have yet to find any silver with it and i guess thats what irritates me the most, i was looking for a detector that really rocks and with all the reviews and hype i thought this was it, but like i said before my old eagle spectrum outhunted this hands down. im not giving up thou ,i just hope this machine starts talking to me soon or it may be going to a new home

As far as LCD and software. When the Explorer is first turned on you will see
a "Minelab" screen shortly after this you will see a "Version" box at the bottom of the screen
which will show the version of the firmware and the date of the firmware.
Any version or date that is not the following will have a new style control
box housing and new style LCD display(Blue color).
The first version was a greenish color.
If upon "startup" you can not make out all of the
"DIGITS" you can push the "Back" button twice rapidly and it will display again.

First run was 99 forget the month and had cracking problems in the shaft camlock along with some misc. problems.

Second run was Sep 2000 and camlocks were made of stronger plastic which corrected the problems...

Put a X8 on your XS and youll get depth close to the stock coil, light weight, good coverage and still be able to seperate well in trashy areas. The 8" coils are super coils for the Explorer series.

You can't go too slow with an explorer...ever. The slower... the better for deeper targets. Go at a snail's pace at best.

well ive been working hard with this machine and im starting to get it a little better, i slowed down to almost a crawl compared to the white and i found a penny about 9" down under a pulltab at about 5 ". thanks for all the advise
